The only differences between Elementary and Ubuntu are the desktop environment, a few configuration files and the default applications.

For desktop usage is pretty nice though, nicely polished.
I was on a distro-testing spree searching for something friendly to recommend to a newbie.
To be exact, out of curiosity I tried also to run the same benchmarks in a plain X-server where the results were much better.
Heh, no one.
Before I could make up my mind the guy just installed Ubuntu.
It was pretty interesting though, my last distro-hopping spree ended around 2004 when I settled with Mandriva (now Mageia).
And lately I kept hearing about new wonder distros (Zorin, Elementary etc) so it was a good occasion to see what's the fuss all about.
Last time I tried it (A long time ago) it had some stability problems, though. I'm not sure if that has been fixed.
