EDIT: found it, changed to auto, wifi adapter still has problems
https://itechscotland.wordpress.com/2011/09/25/how-to-permanently-turn-off-wi-fi-power-management-in-ubuntu/
I have the exactly same WIFI adapter but my issue is different. First off let me begin by saying that this adapter is great, worked as it should ( on windows :( ) and no problems. I got it when I had Windows 7 and everything went smoothly. Then I installed Ubuntu 14.04 and the problems started when I wanted to play any game online ( TF2, L4D2, etc. ).
In normal browsing, no problem what so ever, but the moment I played a game online, my game would stutter, my ping went from 40-50 to 250+ for like 10 seconds then back to normal, then after maybe 2-5 minutes of normality again huge, etc. This issue bothered me like mad since I tend to play competitive as well and I needed a fluent connection.
In the begging I thought it's my router but after resetting and changing settings, still no joy and the stuttering persisted. So I took a closer look at the adapter. After spending around 2 days for solutions, I came up with nothing. I found forums of manually upgrading my Kernel, since many ppl had the same adapter and same problem ( DoTA 2 forums ), after updating the Kernel my ubuntu stopped booting... long story short, reinstalled ubuntu :(.
Then some guys on another forum suggested I should try windows drivers for linux ( or similar name, I forgot, but it's a program ). I tried that, it found new drivers, it installed, asked me to restart my PC which I did and BAM! Ubuntu didn't reboot... again. Had to reinstall... again :(.
At this point I was so frustrated and angry that I wanted to screw the adapter. The final forum I found was a man that made a big technical detail about this adapter and Ubuntu and in the end, after everything he tried he gave up and suggested ppl should either get a different adapter ( in his case non TP-Link ) or use cable connection.
So in the end of the day, I ended up using cable and my games never had any more problems ever since nor my connection.
/rant?? <-- not sure if it was a rant or not but if it was I apologyse but this adapter frustrated me to the max.
Anyways, OP I would suggest you also ditch this since somewhere there is a problem and many ppl tried but could not pin it down. It's a shame because on windows it works normally :(.
Good luck to you, maybe you will be more lucky than me with a solution. Have a nice day :)
Its on a desktop, but I will give that a try.
Really, really wish I could get a cable to my room, but that is quite a long way across my house. The router is back against the wall in the very corner of the basement and my desktop is against the wall in the opposite corner of the floor above. They are as far apart as is possible in my house.
I wonder though if I could buy a router or something to put in my room, have it connected wirelessly to the network, then route a cable from that. Is that possible and/or not too expensive? That would get around both the issue of cables and Linux wireless problems.
Maybe you could try to use a fixed ip. You can either config your Ubuntu to have a fixed one (but remember to tell your DHCP/router to not assign that particular ip address) or config your DHCP to always assign the same address to the MAC of your wi-fi device.
Another solution: to buy a couple of powerline to connect your router to your pc by your electrical system (around 25-30€ ). This is very helpful when you have router and pc on different floors.
