How do I get FPS overlay for all games?
Hi,

I want to have a generic method (like with FRAPS for Windows) for an FPS overlay for all games. I read mumble would do the trick, installed it (Debian Jessie version), configured it to show FPS overlay, pressed ok, left the application open (like stated in some forum or blog somewhere), started "mumble-overlay steam" and inside steam the game (Witcher 2 in this case). No FPS overlay, no overlay at all. Am I missing something?

Ciao,
Eike

The problem with Witcher 2 might be that it really isn't native Linux, but rather it uses eON wrapper around the Windows binary. Does it work in other games that are native Linux ports?
No luck with Metro 2033 or The Bridge either...
I haven't tested this yet, but check voglperf[github.com] out.
There's also vogl[github.com]. It looks like Valve's trying to make a Linux equivilant of FRAPS, I haven't tested these so I have no idea how they work honestly, but give them a try and let us know!

I would like to, but I fear I f*cked up my system last weekend ("Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.") I thought I would have solved that, but... :)

I got mumble to print some (strange) number on glx-gears at least, BTW.

No luck. I got it compiled, I can connect with a browser, but beside the bogelperf wellcome it says "ReferenceError: WebSocket is not defined".
[EDIT]I just realized I had mumble still installed so I tested my suggestion myself and it didn't work, so I removed it from this post (the suggestion was just to launch the game directly like "mumble-overlay steam steam://run/APPID
[/edit]

Also from the description of voglperf it looks like it won't do an overlay, but just print that info into a terminal window, so you'd have to run the game in windowed mode to see it live, or fullscreen but alt+tab out of the game to see the framerate

This is interesting though http://kparal.wordpress.com/2014/03/03/fraps-like-fps-overlay-for-linux/
apparently there's a very nice overlay built directly into the open source drivers.
If only we could get them to make it so simple in the proprietary drivers too.

Ok, voglperf(*) is running now. It seems I had to build the 32 bit binary seperately (although I'm running 64 bits and the readme seems to state otherwise), then the runner has to be started and then the browser is seeing something. So I get 20 to 30 fps in Witcher 2 with medium setting with a Intel quad core and an NVidia 660. Great work. But now at least I can see if there's something to fix in some settings anywhere...

(*) a strange name from a German view, considering "Vogel" means bird. :o)
Cool.
Where does it display the fps at? in-game? Or does it just print it in a terminal window or something?
Both at your choice.
./bin/voglperfrun64 --fpsprint --fpsshow 20920
... is starting the game with Steam id 20920 (Witcher II) with both overlay and printout.
Overlay is flickering heavily for me, but still can be read.
