Steam for Linux

Steam for Linux

Missing 32-bit libraries: libc.so.6
I picked up a little odroid linux box that is capable of running XBMC and all those little fun apps that everyone loves, but I really want to load steam and utilize the in home streaming feature.

The box runs Ubuntu 14.04, and after installing steam I immediately ran into issues relating to the three lib files that I see a lot of other people seem to have problems downloading and installing. After several attempts from different directions, breaking my boot and reloading from scratch, i've decided to ask for a little help. I feel like i am sooo close.

My error is as follows:
Running Steam on ubuntu 14.04 32-bit
STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically
Error: You are missing the following 32-bit libraries, and Steam may not run:
libc.so.6
Error:
You are missing the following 32-bit libraries, and Steam may not run:
libc.so.6
Press enter to continue:
/home/odroid/.local/share/Steam/steam.sh: line 755: /home/odroid/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam: cannot execute binary file: Exec f ormat error

As you can tell, I am no longer getting the lib file errors that most people seem to normally run into, my google searches have unfortunately not shed light onto this new error. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That is strange to be honest. Most people don't have the 32 bit libc because they are running 64 bit Linux, but if "Running Steam on ubuntu 14.04 32-bit" is true, you must have it, the system cannot possibly run without a libc. And the Ubuntu version is new enough, so the libx should be new enough as well...

Right, so you can understand why i've been so confused.

Hmm.. I don't know if this is relevant, but I actually did find libc.so.6 in my /lib folder.

For sure, your system cannot run without a libc!

But Steam says im missing it! Its lying more than my ex-girlfriend!

I wonder if libc has any dpendenices (shouldn't have many, that's for sure) which it cannot load...
You could try this one on a terminal:

STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam
Cinos 2015年6月26日 5時31分
That returns the error:

Running Steam on ubuntu 14.04 32-bit
STEAM_RUNTIME is disabled by the user
/home/odroid/.local/share/Steam/steam.sh: line 710: LD_LIBRARY_PATH: unbound variable
Just a question: Are you sure that you are not using an ARM-kernel?
I think there are indeed also 32bit-ARM processors. But Ubuntu 32-bit is made for i386 computers.

Very good, wooosh! Would have never thought about this!
I thing there actually is an Ubuntu for ARM (at least there's a Debian), but no Steam...

TheX: That's not an Intel compatible processor. It won't work.

It is an Odroid Xu3-Lite. It was given to me as a gift and I am not very familiar with it. It seemed like a cool thing to put steam on though.

Ahah! That answers a lot of questions actually! Well, thank you very much! I guess ill just order a steam link and call it a day

It surely is a cool thing, maybe you can run a little media center or a mini server on it, but no Steam games, sorry.

Some Linux distributions are already capable of supporting ARM processors. - So Linux works!

But Steam already has problems to support 32bit AND 64bit i386-compatible processors.
If you are interested in using Steam on that machine: Look out if Steam will support Android one day!

Anyway: Having a Steam client for ARM would be one thing - Another would be to have games on Steam with binaries for these computers. Although there are some games that also have Android versions these versions are not on Steam currently.

I did not look into it – but just X-forwarding to the television … that may work. I did not look into it how Steam does it – and if you really need a Steam client to just forward your games.
