Well I tried FreeBSD as I am a fan of Archlinux and like to build the whole thing myself.
Here are some results on my lowend PC, the performance is the same if not better than on Linux if we talk about wine.

In general I can not recommend doing this. But it's definitely possible. I actually like BSD OS over Linux but the support is just not there (yet?).
about support just need support when BSD package(s) update process gives an error and
stops ..I think ill can manage the wine software & games by myself I hope.. :)
My distribution of choice is Antergos, which is a pre-configured Archlinux with a nice desktop. There are a lot of user-friendly *nix OSes suitable for Steam gaming: Antergos, Mint, Ubuntu, openSUSE, PCLinuxOS, Mageia, etc. Linux also has better support for new hardware compared to any BSD, which is a fairly big point when talking about a brand new PC build.
1) The Steam client itself didn't entirely play nice with Wine (steamwebhelper.exe frequently crashing). I think this is a somewhat recent problem that applies to Steam under Wine generally and has nothing to do with FreeBSD. This only affects the web browser parts of Steam and doesn't prevent installing/launching games. Some reports say that you can work around this by configuring Wine to emulate Windows XP rather than Windows 7 when running Steam, but I didn't try that.
2) Wine has no support for the FreeBSD joystick/gamepad driver. There used to be a port you could install to get a Linux-compatible joystick device, but it's been broken for a few years.

Have Fun! ^_^
