try Linux cult classic - openTTD - it has to run on any PC (I recall running it many years ago), just make sure to play small map (under 2k).
Eschalon Book 1 also free and it worked great years ago, has isometric view and is light on resources.
these games are free on steam.

Battle for Wesnoth, a turn based fantasy wargame. Likely available in your Linux distro, but also available on Steam.

Seven Kingdoms, Super Tux from linux repos
gog has list of free games - running steam on such low specs can hog all resources, better to run games directly hence why I suggest gog offline installers or repos. openTTD, LinCity are also in repos.

this 3D space dogfight online multiplayer has surprisingly low minimal specs, looks like your elderbook might handle it...

Oh yes Battle for Wesnoth !

If you're into rogue likes, may I suggest DCSS (Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup), that's probably part of most Linux distributions nowadays (on Ubuntu, the package name is crawl-tiles, for the 2D tiles-based version). And of course Nethack (package name is nethack-qt for the qt-based version).

I've heard great things about OpenTTD.

Also if you want Linux native games you can check your package manager, there are some fun games there. My distro has Hyperrogue, Warzone 2100, Freedoom and various source ports (examples: prboom+ for Doom, darkplaces for Quake) and more.

and then of course there is RetroArch for emulated games (there is a Steam version being worked on but no advantages over the standalone version)

even a potato laptop can run a fair share of old classics (or rather an insanely huge amount, lol!)

openrct2, you'll have to supply game files for rct2 but those can be had for fairly cheap (or even cheaper).

doom source ports are also good fun, I recommend crispy doom. You'll have to supply the wads but again these can be had for cheap (or even cheaper)
