Is the thing in the quotes the original text from Hampfdans before dude edited it?
i've had enough of his disingenuous posts
he systematically spreads FUD about linux, it's not just in this thread, and a quick look at his post history makes this pretty easy to spot
this is not an honest opinion from a normal user, it's a hit piece filled with blatant baseless lies mixed with a couple real issues just so he can have a degree of plausible denial
On Linux Mint, as in all distros, the layout persists between sessions (including the cited taskbar at the top), unless you're clumsy enough to confuse a liveboot pendrive with the installed OS, despite the ridiculously noob-friendly install guide, warnings, welcome screens, etc
https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/
On several distros you can even use multiple desktop templates
It's Mac and Windows that have the more limited customization options, by a long shot
Linux Mint's "Driver Manager" GUI is only needed if you have to use closed source drivers for things like Nvidia GPUs and Atheros/Broadcom WiFi cards
Almost everything else works in an instantaneous (really!) plug&play style thanks to builtin support directly in the linux kernel, no driver needed at all
a fresh install of linux mint 21 at my home PC recognizes my wifi multifunctional printer on first boot without a single click... can win10 do that? nope... it can't... i tried, and it needs me to dig into several control panel layers just to find the rightoption to ask it to add the printer, in a trial and error crucible
half true, half FUD, no data on his specific hardware, no info on what specific aspects he thinks are poorly supported
if you have a wifi chip built into the MoBo then you can have a real problem with linux support... some mobos don't have all sensors exposed correctly yet...
...but that's pretty much it for real issues nowadays
most bios updates can be done without any OS, from a pendrive
everything else is automatically and instantly recognized and working, with very few exceptions (that are diminishing month after month)
there is even linux support for extra superfluous things like ARGB lighting, if you look it up... I have RGB fans from 3 different brands, RGB leds on an ASUS MoBo, CoolerMaster casing and G-Skill RAM and all of them just worked in sync when I installed OpenRGB (actually much better than having one 3rd-party app from each, etc)
FUD, FUD, FUD, FUD, FUD, OMFG! FUUUUUUD!
People can play Cyberpunk 2077 on linux, FFS! We can even play Crysis!
Valve's Steam Deck is Linux and it runs almost anything you throw at it... that includes literally thousands of modern games, not retro stuff from 30 years ago
FUD distorting what I said in another thread
Linux supports multi-monitor for desktop uses very well, and SOME games have varied issues with multi-monitor handling
utter nonsense... 4K and even 8K support is just fine
what he may be trying to refer to is HiDPI support, which is bad on Steam on linux, not all of Linux... and there is fine 2x HiDPI support nearly everywhere, the real issue is just fractional UI scaling for screen sizes where 2x doesn't fit very well
ps: Linux Mint 21 does have fractional scaling support and Steam does have a known workaround to force it to honor UI scaling
which visual? there is like an infinite number of visuals to choose from, unlike Mac and Windows...
...and Win 8 10 and 11 are objectively terrible from an UI ergonomics PoV, plus even if you ignore that and look only at aesthetics, and even if you just LOVE the looks of Mac or Windows, you have nearly-identical clone UI visuals available on Linux, so it just can't be worse, can it?
ps: Linux Mint Cinnamon ships with 2 main theme aspects (one flat one more like win7) in both dark and light versions, with several main color accents and has full support for community themes... and that's just one DE among several
he has had zero troubles using it as his daily
i have two computers using linux and a pi
i do not code, i am not an engineer. i do not have any issues that i cannot find an answer, and easy fix, for
no different than when i had issues with windows
what linux needs is a decent pr campaign for the more popular distros
WTF is this guy talking about?
Since Windows started finally acting up on my wife's laptop she's started asking me to switch it to Linux. I've been too lazy lately, though. Her previous two computers used Linux and she honestly preferred it, but Windows wasn't too different.
Now every update, Microsoft is dumping new stuff onto her computer without her permission.
Laziness is not a valid excuse, no sir!
Get your liveboot/setup pendrive out of the drawer, dust it off, plug it in, boot it up and deliver redemption for a fellow penguin soul in need, ASAP!
Sooo this allows UHD Support??
But I bet you don't have any control over Vulkan, like I do with Windows,
because I got a Sepcial SDK Package before it was removed, oO
Does this mean that Linux Supports 8K Resolution, then??
Also when I mean Graphix?? I mean for both AMD / NVidea,
not one, but both in the Industry...
The Driver Store:
Yes the place where you go for all your Drivers,
your packs & such that you download, I forget what it's called,
but things like Extra Panels or task bars, Realtek Audio Drivers,
things to enhance your Desktops with... A lot of these Drivers
were broken to a point where it could screw something up &
you had to find work arounds to have them removed if they
didn't work... I've tried several attempts to get RealTek Audio
to play any form of Sound at all, & never had any luck...
The Desktop??
Everytime my Computer Shut Down, my Desktop
Would not be the way I left it when I was on it last,
everything would be reset every single time.
Graphix, things like Low Latency, Hair Tessalation,
Ray Tracing, many, many of these GPU Features
were not even remotely available at all on Linux
for at least AMD Users...
Linux Games last I checked were just Doom & Quake,
if anything else? Your just using Proton for Emulating
what you already have on Windows that you didn't
even Need Proton for at all...
What a funny way to get everyone on Linux for?
So we can stick you with 1 more stupid Platform
to run your Games from...
Now instead of using STEAM to play Origin Games,
you now need to use Proton to use STEAM which
then uses Origin... Why else would they push people
to use Linux so badly instead of actually making
Games straight on Linux for STEAM??
All These Stupid Platforms are a Joke, & People
keep foooling themselves along the way... What
Next? How can we get people to use 15 different
Launchers to play 1 Game without them knowing it??
I Wouldn't even doub't they found a way to push
people into using Proton to get into the Mac Universe,
where they would use Proton on Mac to use STEAM
that is on Windows to play an Origin Game... It's like
how many different Launchers do we really need??
Since when was 1 not enough... ??
Booting Up STEAM & The Game Instantly Works,
No Proton, No Origin, No UPlay, Just 1 Launcher,
Heck why do we even need any Launchers at all,
whatever happened to just Booting a Game up??
As for Multi-Monitor Support:
I never found a work around for this, because none of
my methods actually got 2 to 3 + Monitors working,
I always had my monitors Disabled in Linux, because
Linux didn't have the Drivers to run them...
And for those claiming that this works??
I've already seen Reports of People in
STEAM Linux claiming that it doesn't work,
so Unless you know something we all don't
i'm pretty sure Multi-Monitor doesn't work...
-- J5 USB No Driver Support
-- HDMI Leaves Other Monitors Off
-- DVI Leaves Other Monitors Off
-- J5 Hybrid HDMI No Driver Support
The Linux Visuals Are Not all that great,
I Had to look for a long time to find a
good Wallpaper & Desktop Themes
that suited my experience...
Because they don't use normal Colors
like Red, Green, Blue, & such like
Windows does...
No you get Colors like: Chrome, Steel,
Orange, Maroon... But you never get any
Colors that fit exactly the ones you want,
& unlike Windows not all Taskbars are
actually Transparant...
Some of your Objects which are kinda like
how they work on WinVista with those Widgets
would flash on screen, disappear, sometimes
you would have to Un-Install them, re-install them,
if you Shut Down your Computer, the Objects
would completely be re-set, & you'd have to
Un-Install & Re-Install every time... The Desktop
Extra Taskbars worked the same exact way...
The whole Linux Experience was fine running
a web browser at it's core, & it was super smooth,
but I was super annoyed by the idea I could
not even setup my Desktop lone enough before
I even got to enjoy anything else Linux had to offer...
Do you know how I played elden ring one year ago on linux, on the day one of its release? I clicked on install button. And then I clicked on play button.
Git gud
lmao-box isn't available for Linux :-(
