Steam for Linux

Steam won't open Bottles
Hello I am trying to launch Bottles from Steam.I added Bottles to my programs but when I hit play it pops up a window saying updating Bottles ,ready to launch then check marks to override bandwidth limit, and a checkmark option for steam ui+join dialog launch game ready. Then it has only a view update and a disabled STEAMUI+little window.Any idea what's going on?

A little more info needed.

What Linux Distro are you using?
Is Bottles launching from that Distros desktop?
How was Bottles installed (rpm, deb, flatpak, etc)?
What is the command you're using to launch Bottles from Steam?

Linux Mint 21, I try launching Bottles from steam after I added Bottles as a game. I think I installed it from a deb. It was from software manager.I can open Bottles if I click on the desktop shortcut I made while installing it.If I try to launch it from steam I get the window and message in my first post.
So you added as a non steam game pointing to '/usr/bin/bottles' (think that's the right default install local)? Everything else is blank on the games properties page?

Have you checked nothing weired is going on in the compatibility tab? Ideally 'Force Compatibility' should be unchecked, certainly not set to anything to do with Proton.

Outside chance checking 'Force Compatibility' and choosing 'Linux Native' from the pull down might work.

Given how Bottles is installed, there is a better way of using it with Steam. Get rid of your current Bottles shortcut in Steam. Go back to Bottles on your desktop. Now the idea is you create individual Bottles for each game you are going to launch this way. Go ahead, create a new Bottle, install a game, and make sure everything works outside of Steam. Now if you click on the three dots to the right of a Bottle name you should get a pull down menu that includes the option to 'Add To Steam'. This will create the non steam game shortcut for you for that game in the Steam Client.

Bottles as in the method for running Windows games under Wine?

I recommend just installing the games as non-steam Windows games under a proton compatibility environment. This will have the same result, and save a lot of hassle.
Depends on the game. Maybe if you mess around with ProtonTricks. Some games I've found to be just plain easier to set up in a Bottle. Dig Dug Deeper was one.

Bottles as in this app that helps manage Wine (same idea as Lutris but simpler to use)

Thanks for the replies.Maybe I should clarify what I'm trying to do.I'm doing this to get EA's Origin and Ubisofts Connect added to steam as a game basically. The only way I've found that creates entries of connect and origin is to use Lutris. On my desktop with those entries of connect and origin has lutris in the command lines.I have the Steam controller so I need to open connect and origin after I'm into Steam. I have no clue besides it's lutris related how I got connect and origin entries in Steam on my desktop.
So my goal is to have Ubi connect and EA's Origin among my games that I can open, then play their respective games. The connection of both connect and origin is mandatory to play those games.

desktop shortcuts are based on .desktop files, which are actually text files you can open with a plain text editor... in there you'll find the exact command lutris uses to call itself then run a specific game...

if you can't point to the desktop shortcut from steam you can at least manually add the same target as the one pointed at

if it doesn't work as expected you might want to try selecting "Steam Linux Runtimes" as a compatibility layer on the entry's properties in steam library (there might be more than one version of the runtimes on the list)

I'm sorry but I don't understand the first two sentences in #8. I did try all the compatibility /runtimes for Bottles but I still get the update error listed in my first post .I tried all of the from linux runtime to 7.xx with the same error.
I'm confused on what you're trying to do. You were talking about Ubi Connect and EA Origins running in Lutrus, which has nothing to do with Bottles.

What game are you trying to run?

Where is the game coming from? Steam? Gog? Epic? CD-Rom? Downloaded from somewhere else? Files on a USB drive?

Lutris and Bottles are two programs that do essrntially the same thing. Connect and Origins are requirements some games have, not games themselves.

Start with the game you want to play. Install it to Lutris/Bottles. If Connect/Origins is needed to play the game then is should install alongside the game.

I apologize for any confusion. As I'm sitting here in no Big picture mode there's a add a game icon in the lower left of the screen. That's the way to add games or even apps or programs to use through Steam. Then the game-app-program will be listed along with your other games that you have.
The only way to use Ubi Connect and EA Origin on Steam in Linux Mint is through a program like Lutris or Bottles. The games I'm trying to get to are Far Cry 3,4, new dawn on Connect and Mass effect 1,3 on Origin. I bought Mass Effect 1 through Origin so I have to install it from origin.
It's simple. I need Bottles to open so I can install Ubi's Connect and EA's Origin through Bottles then I can launch my Ubi and EA single player games.I have had mixed results with a lot of time with Lutris as well. The Lutris info is an example of my desktop installation that is working properly mostly. This stuff can get really confusing for me.
This is not something I've yet tried personally, but roughly how I'd go about doing this.

From what I understand Lutris is supposed to be better for third party launchers. It has scripts built in to solve most of these issues. You say you already got Connect and Origins working through Lutris?

So install Connect and Origins in Lutris. Run whichever has the game you want to install through Lutris and install the game. Focus on getting the game fully up and running in Lutris.

Once Lutris can play the game then you should be able to make a desktop icon for that game so Lutris automatically runs it when you click the icon.

You should then be able to use that desktop icon to add the game to Steam as a non Steam game.

Repeat for each Connect/Origins game you want to add.

Just spent 20 minutes on a post and steam wont post it.JFC I dont know if this will show up so I'll be fast. I already tried lutris on the laptop and after many hours it always returned a' return with error 256' for both Connect and Origin. I was hoping to not mention Lutris to cut down on confusion. I'll post more if the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ post show up now.

My DESKTOP has a working installation of Origin and Connect through steam and lutris because the set launch options for origin and connect have LUTRIS etc.in the text field. Both laptop and desktop have Mint 21.I have connect and origin installed on Bottles but they say they're launching but they never do. If I try launching Bottles OR Lutris through a Steam entry it shows the dialog I posted in my first post. Thanks again for any help this is a nightmare.
