Retail GTA V on Linux - how to get it working with Proton?
Hi guys,

I got an installation of GTA V on my system from my previous windows system, however, it doesnt run. Usually I fixed this in windows by running the GTA V installer and direct it to the GTA V installation folder, however, the GTA V installer does not run in Steam Proton and it gives me an error about Media Feature Pack that needs to be installed.

Did anyone manage to get the retail version running of GTA V on Steam Proton?

I have it and it runs fine for me, but I installed it fresh though Steam/Proton on Linux, and not pointing to the folder that it was installed to on Windows. Maybe that's your problem?

It's hard for me to say for sure. I don't have Windows, so I can't really compare it to that. This is the only computer that I ever played it on (i7 8700K, 16GB RAM, GTX 1060 6GB, Linux Mint 19.1 Cinnamon), and I also haven't played it more than 40 minutes. I intend to play it more someday, but bought the game on sale and took a gamble if it would actually play. When it installed and ran successfully during my initial test run, I figured it would be fine. I'm using Proton 3.16-8 Beta with no modified launch options.

I think I misread your original post. You have a copy of the game that was not purchased through Steam, correct? Your game list on your profile suggest that may be the case also. As Rogue mentioned:

You can add non-Steam games to Steam and run them with Proton now
But I have no idea if you can do this from a previously installed game on Windows, or if you have to reinstall the game completely using Wine/Proton/Lutris
Maybe take a look at this: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/wiki/Using-a-NTFS-disk-with-Linux-and-Windows
