Steam for Linux

Steam for Linux

Games run MUCH slower on Arch [Kinda fixed]
So i today switched from Manjaro to arch.
Just wanted to get more into LInux and learn about it.

So everything is working just as on Manjaro.
BUT
All my games run super slow.

I've install all the mesa drivers. liv32 stuff. Steam itself works fine. I can write this forum etc.
But Battlefield 5 runs extremely slow. Gpu at it's max 1.366gh. Yet the game runs at 20-30 fps with some graphical glitches while it ran with almost locked 60fps and little to no graphical glitches on Manjaro.

Or Blobcat (small indie game) Should run with locked 144 hertz (max the game allows) yet it struggles with 60fps.

Is there some package which i didn't install, or did i miss a config.
Team fortress 2 runs nice, but this one is a nativ Linux application. Problem seems to be Proton games.

You can see my neofetch in my profile for hardware info.

I use the Mesa 21.2.5 according to steams hardware info.

Thanks for any help at all. I'm clueless even after reading some forums which already exist.

have you tried other proton versions? do you definitely have the AMD mesa drivers installed?

nice desktop, btw

Thanks for the desktop :D
And i use the same version as on Manjaro. The latest 6.3.something
No custom ge release. I just installed some package i saw on the archwiki. some "vulkan support" package.
I try this one out.
Currently have to "reinstall" it. because Steam constantly forgets that my secondary drive exists. So i have to create a new steam folder and move everything to this folder.

Still thanks
Ok tried bf5 now with that weird vulkan package
Good news: The game ran mostly stable on the testing range.
Bad news: The floor didn'T load it. Everything else did. stones, houses, my gun. But the floor didn't
Wallhack i guess???

Encountered similar issues regarding slow and stuttering games on ArcoLinux Arch. For me it was Armored Warfare, where I often got stuttering, while on Manjaro all things worked as on Windows. I really made sure to have the similar drivers and libraries installed, so I guess has something to do with internal buidup. Also using Mesa + Vulkan and all necessary libraries, but I never found out what the problem is caused from.

Roll back the Kernel 1 step, Manjaro holds back kernel updates so their stable, possible the kernel is the issue.

I just installed arch yesterday.
So i can't roll back
If i come hoem i'll just check that all driver oackages are installed and update my whole system if there are updates

in Manjaro you just need to go to "system settings - Kernel" and choose the Kernel and Kernel-Version of choice in a nice GUI. very handy
Ok just to be clear. I DO NOT use manjaro. I've switched to arch mainly to learn about linux as a whole.

2nd.
I followed the Archwiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/AMDGPU#Installation

This github article: https://github.com/lutris/docs/blob/master/InstallingDrivers.md

I installed EVERYTHING, have cleared the shader cache from steam, restarted arch after every change and driver package install.
And yet, it won't work.
And i use the current "stable" kernel 5.15.6. The latest which you can see on kernel.org

And again, it just won't work for battlefield, although it ran well on Manjaro (based on Arch)

I'm clueless. I just wait for a kernel update like .15.7 and hope this will fix the issues.

But i'll install GTA V. Maybe that game will work under proton, BF is the only game i tried so far, because i really enjoy it currently...

If I'd want stuff to just work which is reported to work, I'd not use the latest kernel. It wouldn't be the first time it creates problems in gaming.

I know, maybe eventually it'd be better to use the lts kernel. But i tought it would work fine, because it worked fine on Manjaro.

But i can understand this on the "unstable" kernel.
But if something claims to be "stable" i expect everything to at least work fine. Not to be stable to work for a server but good enough for normal day to day use.
I'll jus wait until gta is downloaded and see if it works fine there.
Older game, less effects, other engine etc.
wish me luck
Ok small update.

I installed gta V and everything ran "well"

With that i mean i had to recompile all the shaders, so everytime i saw something for the first time or an effect triggered the first time. there was a stutter
Nothing major, over the time playing the game this is gonna improve anyways

So maybe, eventually, running the most bleeding edge isn't exactly the best choice and it could leave games broken.
But where is the fun of using Arch when i can't be bleeding edge? I mean Ubuntu 21.10 still uses the 5.13 kernel :D

I love bleeding edge! :) But I also love out-of-box experiences like console gaming. atm I run Garuda Linux`s Gaming edition that comes preconfigured and runs mostly amazing right from the start.

Even with windows gaming. Out of the box gaming is not a thing
You probably want to configue graphics settings. Lighting medium, migh details. no shadows so you see enemys, Ultra textures because you got an 8gb gpu etc.
And don't even start with installing mods. They add another layer of coplexity on their own.
And with Linux, no matter which distro you choose, you are getting less and less ootb experience, because you have to make sure you use the right proton version for example.

And as i said, bleeding edge makes the floor not render at all. All bushes and trees are no problem, just the floor.
Some may call it wallhack i call it annoying.

It's hard to believe! I really just fresh installed the whole thing about 2 weeks ago on a new machine and yes, I do tweak some things in the BIOS like SAM, RAM and CPU overclocks and Fans Curves and refine graphics in some games, but in general, every game starts with optimised settings already, while the Linux-Level of hardware is setup by the OS out-of-the-box even with VRR "on" for the freesync display.

No matter how much you try to make Arch stable there are instances where something always in conflict eventually.
