Proton fails with Kernel 5.8.0-36 Ubuntu 20.04
Yesterday, I updated my Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS and obtained the new official kernel (with the update) 5.8.0-36.

With this kernel I have got a lot of problems with some games with Steam Proton.
For example, with the Kernel 5.4.0-59 all works well, I could play Cyberpunk 2077 and Far Cry 5 without problems.

Now, with the kernel 5.8.0-36 I can't play Cyberpunk 2077 and I have got low fps in some areas with Far Cry 5, obtaining for example 7-8 fps in the cinematic scene of Faith.

Please work with Ubuntu and fix that, because some games doesn't start with the new kernel.

Some people need this new kernel due to they have got new hardware pieces which are supported with this new kernel.

Regards and thank you for Steam Proton.

Use xanmod and see if it works

Valve doesn't actively monitor this forum, so maybe you should submit an issue to their bugtracker here:
https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues

Ps: that is where the devs actually do their work, so follow all their advice on detailing the issue, and keep it straight-to-the-point, ok?

I prefer to use an official kernel. Thank you.

Ok, thank you I will report the problem in Github.

Really you could run Cyberpunk 2077 with no problems. That's a first.

It looks a problem with the Nvidia Drivers, I will reinstall it.

Cyberpunk 2077 should probably be played with Proton 5.13, since Valve specifically mentions tweaks to enable playing that game....

in the changelog:
https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/wiki/Changelog#513-4

and in their twitter announcement:
https://mobile.twitter.com/Plagman2/status/1336777378517794817?s=20

Both sources also mentioned that support was at first only possible with AMD GPUs, not sure using Nvidia is possible already or still in the workings, but judging by the changelog it isn't there yet...

ps: funny thing is that you mentioned it working on the older 5.4 kernel, so they did do something right with Nvidia before, even if unannounced.

edit: one more thing rings a bell now... there has been recent friction between linux kernel devs and proprietary module/driver writers due to some inner working features that aren't allowed for incompatible licencing reasons... it did affect nvidia driver at some point but not sure it happened in 5.8.x or later branches

More than likely newer nVidia GPUs (supporting Vulkan) work, It's a matter of getting satisfactory performance that is reasonably comparable to Windows on the same machine that would be the question.

The AMDGPU Mesa driver is downright exceptional in terms of performance, even often beating the Windows driver on properly optimized applications that are available on both Windows and Linux. This is particularly exceptional in that there are fewer per-program tweaks in the Linux driver.

The nVidia driver on the other hand, is a mess to say the least. It's improved, but hasn't kept pace with AMD. Currently all that AMD has to do to permanently dethrone nVidia in Linux is to release a higher end top of the line Navi 2 chip. (Something on a similar scale to their compute-only models except actually containing the video pipeline.)

Sorry guys, I discover that I have got a problem with my motherboard. The RAM socket is broken and it is generating bugs when the system is reading the RAM..

I need to change my motherboard.

Sorry for inconvenience, I thought that it was a problem with the new kernel.

Sorry to hear that! Hardware problems s...ck :steamfacepalm:

Do tell us how it goes with kernel 5.8 once the new mobo arrives, hopefully everything will go smoothly then :winter2019happyyul:

I have bought this motherboard, I expect it works on Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS:

You'll be just fine then! :winter2019happyyul:

Maybe the rgb lighting and fans won't be tunable from the OS, but otherwise everything should just work.

Yazloz, keep updating this thread please, also, I don't think it's your moterboard, I actually wanted to get a fresh ubuntu install 3days ago, my previous one was from 7 months ago on 20.04, the new one as you said with the new Kernel, almost nothing worksanymore for me too, I had Star wars squadron and cyberpunk 2077 working great, now almost all my games don't start whatever the version of proton or nvidia drvers.
I tried changing the nvidia drivers, changing proton version, did the different combinations, nothing worked for me, the only thing I can think about is the new kernel that broke things up, last thing for me to try would be to find the first 20.04 iso and try installing it, but that would mean not being able of upgrading, sad but happens.
Anyway, was just to say that I think your problems are not finshed...
Please update your resolution, I'm curious to know how it goes, I won't be able to reinstall before this week end I think.
