Can I only have Steam through Terminal? [Ubuntu 18.04]
Hello, so I got ubuntu a few weeks ago and did a few thigns on it, then when tried downloading stream through the appstore it never worked. Then I installed Steam through Terminal and that's the only way I can open it. Is this the only way to have Steam on ubuntu and also is there a way to make a shortcut for it?

Thats because Steam is already installed, so it doesn't want to install it again. Try "sudo apt-get remove steam", and then "sudo apt-get install steam" again, and see if Steam is now listed in your application menu

you already should have a shortcut for it if it's installed (look on Desktop or in .local/share/applications)
you can run steam from terminal by just typing steam or via desktop shortcut (you shuld be able to use it just find it)

When I search for anything related to steam in my file explore nothing comes up. Like basicly after I installed steam.deb and steam installer and steam from Ubuntu Software, I uninstalled them and just typed `steam` in terminal and it downloaded, I don't haveany shortcuts or anything for it. I also can't find where my games save to.

Hold on, I just did something. Basicly I found steam_latest.deb so I just double-clicked it and I downloaded it in Ubuntu Software and it actually downloaded. I have a Steam icon in programs so I think I'm fine now. My only problem now is why I can't find the files for anything for steam, I will probably make a different discussion for that tomorrow, thanks anyways. :steamhappy:

you should have link to steam in your menus. It does not matter which way you installed it, shortcuts should be created for menu and for desktop. check your menus under Games or Internet section, also check home/user/Desktop folder for shortcuts

your games stored under steam default library in home/user/.steam/steamapps/common

If you can start it from terminal, the command "which steam" tells you what you would have to link from your desktop.

for servers there is a tool called steamcmd. If you are familiar with the linux commandline it is kind of usable.
I don't know anymore where to download it. And it only supports to install games via game id. https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Steam_Application_IDs

Now it's different, I just got on my Linux and now still will just not open so I uninstalled it and steam would open but Terminal would have to be open. Then I installed steam again and it has the same problem. Also I can't find home/user/.steam/steamapps/common

Holy crap, I have been using Linux for what feels like forever, and I never knew this. Thanks!

Just to clarify, you did substitute your user name in place of home/user/.steam/steamapps/common, right? This location is where your games are located, but if it's a fresh install, you wouldn't have any games there, and the folder may not ever get created until your first game is installed.

Steam files will be installed to /home/your-user-name/.steam/ (or ~/.steam for short, "~" is short for /home/user/)

If you can open Steam through terminal, then Steam is installed. If you close out the terminal, then all the programs associated with that terminal will get closed also. So thats probably why you say that terminal needs to be open.

If for some reason you did not get a desktop or start-menu link created when Steam was installed, you can create your own. It's been a while since I've used Ubuntu, but you should be able to create a new launcher, with "steam" as the command, and place it wherever you want.

Well when I go to home, there's nothing with my name. Also how would I make a launcher?
Beninan Jul 17, 2018 @ 4:56pm
is there anything in /home? There should be some folder in there, that is named the same as your user name on the computer. That's where all your user files and settings are stored.

Sorry, I haven't used Ubuntu for probably 8 years, and they have changed their graphical shell since the last I used it. I'm sure you can find out how to create a launcher pretty easily by searching online. I would guess that you can right click somewhere and select "create launcher", or something similar to that.

Well if click on `Home` it has multiple folders like documents, downloads, and all those things but nothing with my username.
resonance Jul 17, 2018 @ 5:04pm
Wait hold on, I just turned on hidden folders so now I can see steam, but why doesn't it have anything to open steam?
Beninan Jul 17, 2018 @ 5:08pm
Usually all your user files will be located in /home/username/, but it would appear that yours are simply located in /home/. I'm not sure if that's the normal way on Ubuntu now, but that's odd. Usually you would have a separate folder in /home/ for each user that the computer has. So if you were to add a new user, I'm not sure how that would work.

So now your Steam files are probably located in /home/.steam/. Keep in mind, any folder with a "." in front of it is a hidden folder, so if you have hidden folders "kept hidden" in your file brower's settings, then you wouldn't see the folder.

Oh, well I just want to know how to open steam from that folder
