Any distro that have a recent version of drivers/kernel will give the same performance with some minor tweaks (e.g. set cpu governor for performance).

From my point of view, the distro selection is a very personal thing. Just like the selection of your DE :D

In no particular order:

Ubuntu
Ubuntu MATE
Linux Mint Cinnamon
Linux Mint MATE

My favourite is Linux Mint Cinnamon, but check out those 4 options.

If you want something more Windows ish, Cinnamon works well because you can config the appearance to be very Windows like. MATE is like halfway between what Cinnamon feels like and what Ubuntu feels like.

Would you recommend Manjaro ? Or do you have any reasons not to ?

I'm more of a debian guy myself but i`ve found Debian to be iffy with my drivers and not giving me the performance that is to be expected. I`m not sure if thats due to the Ryzen not really responding well to adjusting the Govenor, since they rolled out an extra power plan for the cpu in windows or it was something i messed up.

What i`m looking for is a distro that is satisfying. I ran Mint for some time and found it to be a bit "boring" on the linux side. I enjoy using the cli and puzzeling around with it so it can be a tad more challenging. :-)

I use Manjaro full time & have no issues

Oooh, well that's the opposite to me, I just like my OS to work and act generally sane, and I'm a recent newcomer from Windows 7, so I prefer to not have to touch the terminal at all if possible and have a Windows ish UI, which is why I gravitate towards Linux Mint Cinnamon.

You could use Ubuntu Server, you don't even start with a desktop environment with that! 100% terminal! :D

Manjaro is apparently the 'easy' version of Arch so you could use Arch even I guess.

I am on linux for a few years already and still love Linux Mint Cinnamon. It is a stable, well designed and polished user interfacd and user experience, which can be valuable even when you're not looking for a windows look-alike.

It lets you do almost anything via GUI but this doesn't prevent you from using the terminal at all so you can learn on your pace, but are not forced to.

Also it doesn't suddenly change everything, just brings gradual improvements. It may be boring to some, but you are still free break things on your own by messing around with the OS and installing ppas, etc ;)

It is based on ubuntu so what works for it usually works for mint too. For Steam and games this is useful.

Buuuuut... if you want CLI action then probably ArchLinux will be your thing. Not much preinstalled or preconfigured, but it has incredibly detailed instructions on archwiki for nearly anything so it can be rewarding to learn with it, it is unlikely you'll be blindly banging your head with undocumented issues.

Personally, I would not. They've had some issues in the past, and I'm not a fan of the way they handled them. You can read about it (from their perspective) here:

https://forum.manjaro.org/t/im-fed-up-about-manjaro-is-insecure-unprofessional-discussions/5536

I'm also not a fan of their approach to updates. I would recommend Arch itself over anything Arch-based. But that's just my opinion, it's really up to you.

You nailed it with that post man :-) The Videos hits it and explains it well and that with humor. I'm going to keep that and share it to everyone who want's to start using linux but is overwhelmed by the amount of distros you can get.

I also read the link regarding manjaro. I've heard about that incident on the side but didn't get to much into it. I did however check out their forums and how they handle beginners or people asking questions. I had that "high and mighty" feel about most of them and that's a big no no for me. You don't treat people from a high horse who want to learn something. So yeah, no Manjaro.

I have yet not decided what distro i will use. But like i know myself .. i'm going back to debian .. as always after a few weeks of having a distro side chick..

thx for the input guys. much apprechiated.

Linux Mint is the best in my case, I don't have any kind of problem with him.
Sometimes, Ubuntu (normal, parakeet, etc.) gives me problems with the sound (forcing it to go through HDMI, so I can not use my speaker with them) and if we talk about Debian, as far as I know it's limited (in all the distro) to the controllers 390 of Nvidia (in the stable version of ppa graphics we are in 410).

(Sorry if I write something incorrectly, I'm still learning English).

I'm testing out Kubuntu right now because i have a day off and it's offering me the 390 drivers as well. And my gpu runs unessecary hot with the powerplan set to adaptive. Like 20 c° above normal in idle. *sigh*

sudo apt-get update

Currently the stable offered is 415.27 and 418.43 was just released by Nvidia and will probably appear soon in PPA. 390 is not best for gaming and newer GPUs.

And Mint CInnamon is not as efficient gaming platform as Kubuntu from my experience. I was able to get FPS boost by migrating to Kubuntu just recently. KDE Plasma is much lighter.

ty for the help :-) I got the latest driver now and booted into a game of Rust. Runs smooth now :-)
Temps are fine, i totally forgot that i used xfce before which is not as heavy on the gpu as kde is (duh).
totally satisfied now.

I'm currently using Manjaro and love it!!! I highly recommend it!!!

Which Distro has the best performance ?
A source-based distro with a custom kernel.
Sounds pretty Gentoo to me: you decide the exact performance questions.
You know, compiling exactly for your processor, cflags and such. Kernel tweaking, removing extra things you`ll never need… there`s a lot of things you may consider.

Ubuntu seems to be working the best for gaming

Sparky Linux seems to be pretty stable too... but most of the debian children seem to be the list
