Steam Play and Japanese fonts
Hello, I play Final Fantasy XIV in Japanese and at least most of the launcher shows squares instead of Japanese... Normally I'd install Japanese fonts on wine using winetricks on wine I'm not sure what I should do here?

I'm currently installing updates so I don't really know weather it will be fine in the game itself, but I'm a little curious if I should try to make winetricks work or something or if there's a setting I don't know somewhere?

same path here, install fonts with winetricks to your game prefix. also you can roll corefonts if needed, Proton does not install it by default.
today with new beta version of Proton they changed way of invoking its wine, see readme page/changelog on proton github to get correct command (in case it will be changed again :))

Thank you very much for your reply!
I managed to make it work I think with winetricks though some other things need to be worked on for now I think, i'll test more and more ^^

I only have 1 issue though... I can't see to write Japanese characters in chat, which is very incovenient, now I have no idea if this issue is also on Wine or not but... Does anyone haveany idea? (=^・^=)

p.s. FFXIV seems to work great on proton

There is a feature in Wine that transparently replaces fonts with other fonts, to deal with applications that hard-code the name of some proprietary Windows font. However, I don't know whether the standard build of Proton has set this up. Default mappings are meant to be patched in by each distribution package maintainer, but Valve is in an unusual position here because they distribute Wine but not the system fonts.

Also, I don't know whether there are any free fonts that are fully metric-compatible with the usual Japanese windows fonts such as MS Gothic.

Actually here it doesn't seem to be an issue with fonts anymore, my main issue is that when I press my shortcut to switch from english input to romaji/kana input, it doesn't happen (and the game doesn't show it's icon to say with input method I'm using which is why I am confused

Sadly I don't think the MS native IME is implemented in wine.
