sorry I have no idea if there's any fix because I haven't looked into it - just checkd if the game works after purchase and put it away to my backlog.
Maybe both are using an old wine version?
I use wine-staging 2.21 from their repos. it is newer than in Debian repos. POS can use older version tho (what it have in scripts)

(go to the "No Sound" title)
thank you for the suggestion. nice reading. however it suggests how to fix wine's sound when you have no sound on that wine prefix. my wine prefix is capable to play sounds yet game refuses to beep :)
that Microsoft makes sure we'll suffer with its creations on Linux :)
Yeap, I notice that. But he also shows an audio option in order to test audio on that prefix. I didn't know that option :p
I'm using the default Pulseaudio setup to "Analogue Surround 5.1 Output" on one of my motherboard's Realtek ALC1220A codecs. In the audio tab in winecfg, the selected driver is winepulse.drv; device defaults are all (System default), and speaker configuration is Pulseaudio, Stereo; the Test Sound button in this tab works for me. Perhaps check this tab and see if you can figure out if that particular WINE prefix has any problems with audio.
I've been testing what you said, but I do not get it.
If I put this in the console:
yaourt -S alsa-lib alsa-plugins lib32-alsa-lib lib32-alsa-plugins
I do not install any libraries, it tells me that yaourt: The order was not found.
The same with the rest.
Can someone tell me more step by step, or do a little video to help the newbies that we have this problem?
I appreciate your help.
I used winetricks to install dsound file (for wine)
for play on linux it will be this one
https://www.playonlinux.com/en/app-871-POL_Install_dsound.html
winecfg sound settings: winepulse, defaults and at the bottom use Stereo instead of 5.1. it failed to work untill I issued winetricks --force dsound
I'm not sure how to enable it for selected wine prefix in POL interface (never used it as I prefer wine), if someone can guide the OP on how to add dsound to their AOE prefix that would be awesome
AOE II seem to run with WineHQ:
https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=99
I recommend the current (X)ubuntu and WineHQ:
https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu
POL also is working on Ubuntu. If you don't like the Gnome-Desktop use Xfce (Xubuntu) which runs pretty well and is good for gaming. In any case, I recommend Ubuntu in whatever flavour you choose. It is much easier for beginners, very safe and stable. But don't use Ubuntus old Unity desktop. It's not being developed any further. Just install version 17.10 (Artful).
I can also recommend the game 0ad. I haven't played it many times, but it got good ratings from people who like AOE. 0ad runs nativly under Linux and is free. I also highly recommend Civilisation. Version 5 and 6 run natively under Linux. You can buy them over steam.
