Steam for Linux

Steam for Linux

Steam cannot connect to the servers (Zorin OS Lite)
Over the last year or so I've been dabbling with various Linux distros via live USBs. Recently I dug out an old toshiba satellite laptop (from 2008 I think O___o) and decided to install Zorin OS on it. So far almost everything has been running smoothly enough.

While I dont expect it to be of much use for gaming (beyond dosbox games perhaps), I thought it would be interesting to take a look at my Steam library and see whats natively available within it for Linux. After installing the client, signing in and updating, the client pops out a message of being unable to connect to the servers. The net connection seems to be fine (I've downloaded some games from both GOG and Humble, and streamed a few videos on YouTube).I figured this could either be a compatability issue with the OS or that the laptop is too old or low spec.

As I mentioned, I dont really expect to use steam much with this old bucket of bolts, but as I am intending to learn my way about linux (and in this case Zorin OS) I think troubleshooting this could be a good step to understanding the system a little better, so if anybody has any ideas I'd appreciate the help. I'll try and dig up the system specs a bit later today in case thats of any help.

You can change your profile to public, then go here: https://www.lorenzostanco.com/lab/steam/
and Insert your Steam ID/name/URL

confirm and wait a minute, then you'll have a number of filters, including platforms.

Example: https://www.lorenzostanco.com/lab/steam/u/facePlanted

(and then you can set back your profile to private)

oh ta. a handy thing!
Sorry to say, but the Intel Celeron M 410 CPU listed in these specs is exclusively 32-bits...

It is therefore no longer able to run Steam on it, so you'll have to turn it into a TV gaming machine some other way.

Here are a couple couch-optimized retro-gaming and media-center linux distro projects that would fit well with it (I believe all have x86 32-bits ISOs available yet, but couldn't verify because my internet is surprisingly uncooperative right now):

Also while Steam itself requires 64bit to run, some Steam games use only 32-bits and can be ran directly if copied over from another system where you log in to steam and download your games... not many linux natives though, afaik many linux ports are at least partly done in 64-bit already, but no harm trying.

To have some game controller support on "normal" linux distros without Steam running, a nice solution is using the "SC Controller" project, which offers a nice system-wide controller support that you'll need for proper couch-gaming... those two linked above are made for couch usage, so they already have controller support cooked in (and fullscreen menus, etc)

Yes, Rogue already managed to confirm that above (but thanks nontheless) https://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/0/1640919103684777241/?tscn=1565645766#c1640919103689469371

im really not bothered about gaming on it (as I said in the OP) though I do have MoO2 and MoM on it along with freeciv should i get the itch.

I think really (aside from watching the odd film on it / some music) ill maybe use it more for word processing and generally fiddling about with linux to learn it a bit more.

on that note several of the keys had stopped working under its original XP loadout, and the dvd drive had stopped working properly thanks to an incident with securerom - but now are both working fine again, and considering its age, its managed to download at pretty good speeds over wifi as well.
still some life in that mule yet! :)

cheers again everyone!
If you REALLY need to play some of your steam games. SteamCMD is available in 32bit still. Just keep in mind it's command line and not very user friendly. It's typically designed for dedicated servers, not desktop use.

However, you can simply create desktop links for all of your tasks on it.

Aye i did consider that path, but im not the most viable with command lines right now, and as I said in the OP, its not about gaming. :)
