oh ta. a handy thing!
It is therefore no longer able to run Steam on it, so you'll have to turn it into a TV gaming machine some other way.
Here are a couple couch-optimized retro-gaming and media-center linux distro projects that would fit well with it (I believe all have x86 32-bits ISOs available yet, but couldn't verify because my internet is surprisingly uncooperative right now):

Also while Steam itself requires 64bit to run, some Steam games use only 32-bits and can be ran directly if copied over from another system where you log in to steam and download your games... not many linux natives though, afaik many linux ports are at least partly done in 64-bit already, but no harm trying.
To have some game controller support on "normal" linux distros without Steam running, a nice solution is using the "SC Controller" project, which offers a nice system-wide controller support that you'll need for proper couch-gaming... those two linked above are made for couch usage, so they already have controller support cooked in (and fullscreen menus, etc)
im really not bothered about gaming on it (as I said in the OP) though I do have MoO2 and MoM on it along with freeciv should i get the itch.
I think really (aside from watching the odd film on it / some music) ill maybe use it more for word processing and generally fiddling about with linux to learn it a bit more.
on that note several of the keys had stopped working under its original XP loadout, and the dvd drive had stopped working properly thanks to an incident with securerom - but now are both working fine again, and considering its age, its managed to download at pretty good speeds over wifi as well.
still some life in that mule yet! :)
cheers again everyone!
However, you can simply create desktop links for all of your tasks on it.
