Steam for Linux

Clear Linux - Opinions
Hello, I installed Clear Linux 4 days ago and I have to say I'm very pleased with the performance boost. Altho, not radically better, my benchmarks show a mild increase of around 5 FPS in Steam (which is in the error margin but still) and much less stuttering in Dolphin Emulator (Lutris runner). I would totally recommend trying it, altho setting up all your programs and drivers for it can be near impossible. So recommended for experienced Linux users I guess. Also I've heard of optimizations that can be done in other Linux distros to get the same performance boost, anyone caring to elaborate (especially if it concerns Manjaro or Arch)? In general, has anyone else tried this distro and if so, what your opinion on it?

но извините что у меня гемерский кампьютер стоит по лучше чем у вас может и больше
I'm going to try it out in a VM and I'll tell you my "results".

Ok, hope you have a great time with it. :D
Ok I understand all your points, will try installing Vanilla Arch in the future as I like the AUR. Why did you suggest Gentoo? I've not heard many good things about that distro. Also, I suggest giving Clear Linux a spin, it might surprise you . :D
A couple of days ago I'd never heard of it but it's popped three times since then!

Phoronix has a new article related to IoT....
https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=up-squared-clear&num=1

Some real world benchmarks.... look at the wav-mp3 conversion. Though tbh, I haven't done that in almost 20 years!

Ok the tests are in. Tomb Raider (2013) benchmarked on Ultimate settings:

4K
Clear Linux: 21 FPS
Manjaro Deepin: 18 FPS

1440p
Clear Linux: 35 FPS
Manjaro Deepin: 33 FPS

1080p
Clear Linux: 40 FPS
Manjaro Deepin: 37 FPS
A clear increase!

LOL! XD

Not so much but still I'm installing the linux-clear package from the AUR which is the Clear Linux Kernel to see if I can get better performance in Manjaro. A little more performance for free is always nice. :D

It should be noted that I was on Gnome in Clear Linux and on Deepin on Manjaro so that plays a role too. Finally i had enabled Gamemode in Manjaro while in Clear Linux it was just with the default configuration. :D

These are my specs. The kernel is taking forever to build. I'll be back with the results tho. :D

Cool, so you do have an Intel CPU. I wonder how AMD CPUs fair on Clear Linux, or if there is any difference beyond what you'd expect.

I found some benchmarks with AMD on Phoronix (first google resutls when you type "Clear Linux AMD") and apparently Ubuntu is better than CL in the Geometric Mean so I guess for AMD CL is not that well optimized. :D
yeah I totally agree, I will try some manual tweaks in my kernel to to see if that makes any difference. It's just that I'm a total noob so some things are bound to break I guess. :D

There are some userspace tools available. I use 'cpupower'.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CPU_frequency_scaling

So these are programs that allow you to change the CPU governor settings?

Someon in the Manjaro forums suggested these [github.com] tweaks. I don't know how to go on about implementing them, I will have to look it up. :D
Thanx! :D Yeah I have gamemode installed and enabled in Lutris so I guess I'm fine with that. :D
Do you know how I can boot from another kernel? I installed linux-clear on manjaro but the system says I'm using the Manjaro kernel. I want to use the kernel I just built (after roughly 4 hours XD). :D

You'd have to reboot and select the kernel you want from GRUB (or w/e your bootloader is).

Yeah I figured, ok I'm in, time for some testing. :D
Ok I have a problem, the nvidia drivers aren't working on this kernel for some reason. I tried to switch using the optimus manager but I got this error:

the nvidia module does not seem to be available for the current kernel. It is likely the Nvidia driver was not properly installed. GPU switching will probably fail,

Any ideas what I can do?
