How to install a new Linux OS Easy-Peasy (like Ubuntu 17.10) and SSD Advice Too!
Note: Edit Nov. 12th - Edited my "1st (of 3) After install list " for only definitely Great Stuff!
(it seems to be getting some attention - WooHooo!)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just gave some advice to someone else and feel it may help many others, so here it is
Trying to help, Mark
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since you are a newbie I will give a newbie friendly answer.

I sure hope you have your /home Partition on a separate HDD ... if so it's easy peasy to re-install.
If not, back it up and re-install with a separate "/home partition! ... This is crucial for easily backing up and re-installing in the future. It's Awseom. A reinstall for me takes 15-30 minutes. All update/Driver/extra programs all back to their Origional Settings.

So, with your /home in a separate partition you obviously need the "/" or Root Partition on a different one.

Make your root Partition 10-20 Gb (20 if you have lots of space)
save the rest for your home and ...

a 3rd partition, for Swap (1/2 to 2 1/2 times yourRAM is a good bet) and possibly
save another 10-20Gb for free space for another Distro Later. And ...
if using a SSD drive leave 10% free for its' health (or so I have heard)

UPDATE:
Maleko Suggested 25%, and Dirty Camper then said todays SSD's take care of it internally (no need for Free Space on our drive), and Maleko and I think he is likely right (SSD's are relatively new and developing fast), but Maleko pointed out that it's still a good idea (HDDs) as well not to fill it up past 85-90%, historically it has always cause slowness at least and other problems.
Read M alekos later posts, and Dirty Campers - They are VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE!

Your New Operating system will adopt your exhisting /home drive quite flawlessly (Including ALL YOIUR SETTINGS!)

Some other points ...
Don't install to separate DE on the same Computer - it ALWAYS leads to problems (like gnome and KDE... )

A greaat way to install ALL your "Other programs" in 2 clicks is to make a note (I loive Tomboy notes) and here is my 1st (of 3) After install list - you are welcome to use it

1st (of 3) After install list
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
sudo apt-get install arandr btrfs-tools cairo-dock deluge deluged duperemove flashplugin-installer fslint gdebi gksu gnome-common gksu gnome-tweak-tool gparted gedit gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad glmark2 gtkorphan gufw hardinfo hddtemp inxi lm-sensors mesa-utils mpegdemux mpv nautilus-dropbox nemo nodejs ntfs-config pavucontrol paman paprefs pavumeter pm-utils preload samba steam smartmontools synaptic sysinfo tlp tlp-rdw ubuntu-restricted-extras ubuntu-restricted-addons unison-gtk unison unzip ufw vlc
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

remember to install the proprietary drivers,
Update and restart at least 3 time befor it is stable ... and ALWAYS resart when it asks you to - no delays.

Easy Peasy - Good Luck Mocka,
Cheers, Mark :steamhappy:

Hi again Ack,

Installation tips are fine but i wouldn't recommend Bleachbit to newbies, instead of Ccleaner on Doze that is considered almost 100% safe you can and will f***k up your system if you don't know what you're doing and don't have a snapshot to restore.

That.. or just use Aptik in combination with Timeshift for entire OS (root + home- snapshots). I love everyhing from TeeJeeTech, great guy. sends regular updates after i donated him 10$.

http://www.teejeetech.in/p/aptik.html

Great Answer Caelistas,
Aptik looks great, and I Just easily used it to backup stuff from My "?" Root Partition which I had always went without or did amnually.
Since a Sync of One's /home directory cobers SO MUCH (Files and Settings) ... I don't really need Timeshift as I use Unison and love it and am used to it. I like to brouse my backup which a Sync program is greart for.

But Aptik looks great for
PPA (Software Sources)
Themes and Icons in (/usr/share)
Installed Software (As YOU SUGGESTED) AWESOME!
and others

Thanks again, Mark
Curious does one need to Donate forAptik's "Restore" Part of the program

No, however i don't use the one click restore and backup but rather do the individual parts that i want.

Donating is optional and it isn't paid software.

After a recent re-install APTIK Worked Great - though frankly ...
... my backed up /home partition does ALMOST EVERYTHING :

Computer and App Settings are ALL adopted from the /home drive in dot.app plain sight in your hidden files (.files))

Very little is needed from your / "root" partition -
except "ppa's" which by default SHOULD be kept to a minimum for less issues

But none the less Aptik is a great optoin for Newbies and also themes that can (for a few) are in the / root partition. And quite slick too

Just trying to help, As Always, Mark :steambored: :steamhappy:
And i just did a backup of my "Installed Software" and it was SOOO SLICK!
but here is a list from a perfectly working Ubuntu 17.10 Optimus Laptop. And Aptik showed all my program beutifully but the svae file is overkill - here it is use if ou dare!

Sorry it was too long to be accepted. Which in fact makes my point - the dependencies are waesomely included but brought the number of "Installed Software" to the 1,000s.

A Tomboy note or any other is still a great way for backing up All You Apps and easily manged visually too.

Just My thoughts, Mark :steamhappy:
UEFI - SOLVED

For those having Uefi issues, I just re-installed and decidied to give it a try (instead of in Legacy mode) and sure enough it complained. I had just read the Ubuntu UEFI tutorial, (having heard thtat recently one can now install "Secure Boot and "Fast Boot" - Which I had always thought was Windows trying to boot as fast as Linux and MAC. Well it seems possible butn ot advised. I gtried and Ubuntu in the install even asked me to turn it off - I didn't and evrtything went well, then after my Successful install (Getting ahead of myself), Ubuntu even asked to turn it off from with Ubntu 17.10 - for me (with my concent) - QUITE SLICK!

But why do you ask am I writing this. ... for others having problems with UEFI. The Ubuntu reference page refers to needing a "efi" partition if NOT dual booting (as Windows already has one)
but it was a little tricky. So here I go from memory so not perfect.
It asked fro 1/ efi and /boot/efi for mount point both were not quite right !!!!!
1st there is no such thing in Gparted or "Disks", but I FAT 32 (I could be wrong here perhaps it was msDOS) but either way no efi mount point option or anything like it.
But here is the trick once you create it (100-400MB), then click OK and "Change (Edit) AGAIN!!!!
tyhen you see a mount Option for /boot (no EFI for sure) but that worked
I am sure i am getting this screwed up ... but
the end result was an efi partition *started as something else (FAT32 or DOS) and Ended as ?Boot for "Mount Point!

Not straight forward at all but worked!
