Keep getting this error: OpenGL GLX extension not supported by display
After trying to open up steam, I was met with this error message:

OpenGL GLX extension not supported by display

This is unusual, since steam has always worked fine for me in the past. I am currently running on a debian based linux distribution. Any help is appreciated.

Which one? And what's your GPU?

Parrot security, and my GPU is AMD

Initially, my operating system never caused any issues regarding steam, and has been great for everyday use. This is the first error I've experienced so far.

And I believe my model is Kaveri [Radeon R6 Graphics]

Kernel versión? Mesa version? Do you have integrated gpu (i.e. an apu)?

Kernel version: 4.11.0-parrot6-amd64

Mesa version (?): When I run the command lspci -vnn | grep VGA -A 12 in my terminal, I receive this error, Xlib extension "GLX" missing on display ":0". I have tried using glxinfo | grep rendering and glxinfo | grep Open instead, but I keep getting the same results.

Yes, I have an apu.

Try this: $ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep glx
And share with use the output.

Also, to get your Mesa version try this: $ glxinfo | grep "OpenGL"

Ok, here we have a problem. You've got an AMD VGA but the glx driver for Nvidia. Did you install Nvidia driver or used to have an Nvidia VGA installed in your system? Either way, you should remove the Nvidia driver from your system in order to let the things work properly.

I don't recall ever installing Nvidia, but I've heard of steam installing it automatically for some people after updating. I never would've guessed that this is what was causing the issue.

I just started up steam, and it works like a charm. Thanks for all the help!

Are you running steam as root? That's the only way that steam can change the driver. Anyway, god to know your problem is solved :D

I might be running it as root, now that you mention it. I'll try not to make a habit out of that in the future. Thanks again!

How do you remove the Nvidia driver?
