Can someone explain one part of the ending to me?

So I have played through twice and I am trying to understand - so if the girls get away with the hit and run does that mean the whole thing with that guy killing someone doesn't happen? Because he is dead?

I think it's implied that after having killed the spouse and having ran away he was stumbling around the desert and ended up being hit by the girls' car. Sort of karma getting back to him.
