First off, DI is super important. That little blue wheel will either make your opponents combos super easy to perform, or really hard to. It makes it so that when you are hit you go more in the direction the wheel is pointing.

Whether or not to go to multiplayer is up to you, I only spent half an hour in single player, but that only works if the game naturally makes sense to you, or you don't get frustrated easily.

when i got the game i went straight to multiplayer, i think you'll learn more that way since you see what other people do

well my suggestion is to play couple of match yourself with the vanilla characters, familiarize everything you need and you can found a guide somewhere for the popular mods in the guide section hope you have fun

i would say to get a feel for the base roster and how they operate before getting into any modded characters (if that was your intention to begin with).

There are only 5 vanilla characters what do you expect

"only 5" when they all have a theoretically infinite number of interactions is insane

Play singleplayer modded or unmodded and multiplayer vanilla until you get a feel for the gameplay, then play modded characters online.

The only real way to learn how to hustle is by fighting others. Especially vanilla vs vanilla fights, and especially over voice chat.
Vanilla cast is small enough to the point you can actually learn and predict movements, the core of the game, and start to understand moves on a broader level.
