Yomi hustle is pretty competitive, it doesn't even have a real singleplayer mode.
You're going to need to learn how to beat others, it's nothing like other fighting games. The absolute best thing you can do is get the piss beaten out of you. I have learned so much from getting pummeled by dude's echelons higher in skill than me that I went from basically hitting buttons till I hit somebody to executing pretty lengthy combos in the span of maybe 3 days.
It's a game of chess masquerading as a fighting game, prediction is everything.
Don't be afraid to throw out something completely unpredictable either, the best move is always the most predicatable.
That's why people take it "competitively" is because the only way out of the match is as a victor or as a puddle on the floor
It's soo fun and engaging, really makes you want to learn the game more when you just spend most of the matches just messing with a blue circle and locking in, begging that your opponent messes up.
This is definitely a strategy game and I respect that you really want to play it. Yes people are going to be making chaotic and sometimes stupid plays because
*People are Chaotic, and often times stupid*
Sometimes they will choose the optimal choice, sometimes they will make a terrible choice, unfortunately that means your strategy has to evolve on a match by match basis. Most games i find myself choosing a counter to what i would do if i was them and my opponent NOT choosing the optimal move was in fact optimal after all because my move left me open.
As far as being hyper competitive...this is a turned based strategy/fighting game
both genres are known for sweaty tryhards, that's part of what some people enjoy about those games and this one is no different.
I also realize it can be frustrating to get bodied on Yomi Hustle and not be able to figure out why, happens to me pretty often and i have to watch my replays in 0.25 speed to see where i messed up.
If you want to play casually, just use Fallen from the mod workshop
He is fun, has a great move set, extra health, a counter move, multiple far reaching attacks, and a command grab that 1 shots opponents in the right circumstance(i think this is a bug) also the replays look cool
Learn the Nuances of the DI input, it can be a game changer
Maybe this youtube vid will help you as much as it helped me
if all else fails, just play single player and have fun making cool fight videos casually at your own pace
Nobody can tell you how to play the game, and you're allowed to feel how you want about it
