Wow... balancing is terrible
Wizard and cowboy are straight up the ONLY viable options in this game. Because either one has ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ amounts of tracking and range for options.

Meanwhile, ninja is woefully impractical because each move requires 2 or more turns of prep and robot is not popular because it's in the same boat.

I think the game has a steep learning curve.........at least that seems to be where I am at. I have very little fighting game background and I am struggling to figure it out. Like all games, there will probably be shifts in the meta as players learn more techniques.

As someone who plays Robot, it isn't as under-powered as you're implying. Armour is an effective way to just shrug off attacks so that you can retaliate with a stronger attack, and it's got amazing potential if you manage to hard read them (such as catching a roll with a chainsaw, then using a bounds check, earthquake, earthquake combo for free).

Ninja has plenty of options to distract opponents, get close, and deliver quick attacks that lead into 15+ hit combos that take 33%-50% HP off. If you're queuing any move that gives you any kind of frame disadvantage, then you are choosing to open yourself up to literally any character's attacks. No move has "prep", its not a card game, you are just choosing a bad move and getting opened up because of it.

wizard's tracking isn't that good compared to the mobility of the ninja and cowboy, except the orb which constantly eats meter. cowboy's only tracking moves don't lead to much damage, and his other moves with range are either slow or punishable or both. his sword is very fast with good range but his move options for getting into that range are limited.

ninja has the best move options of any character, and some of the fastest offensive options, plus ways to engage at any range. so he has the ability to either force the opponent into a situation that allows the ninja to do what he actually wants to do (run up and punch their faces in), OR, since a long-range attack almost always requires prediction and commitment, the ninja can wait for a committal attack, avoid it/ruin the prediction, and then punish them. yeah you have to read a couple turns ahead but hey, that's fighting games. and this one's turn-based so it's even easier!

i haven't played the robot and i suck with grapplers anyway but i've gotten wrecked by enough of them to know that if you make a mistake they can EASILY delete a quarter of your health, minimum.

ninja is easily the second best character. He's got outrageously good oki if you end combos on your own terms, quickslash is extremely degenerate and constitutes basically his entire gameplan, and he wins (66-33) or can veto certain common RPS situations with his fast buttons and good movement.
Cowboy is the worst character. None of his matchups are good.
Wizard is comedically overpowered, yes. He has literally no problems, he's the best grappler, the best rushdown, the best zoner (zoning is his weakest area). The orb gives you nightmare setups where it's guess for game six times in a row and guessing right doesn't even give your opponent a hit, just another turn where they're at +0. Without the orb he has difficulty establishing offense without freecancels but it's not like he has to respect anything either.

So exactly like grapplers do in every game, including games where they're severely underpowered. Potemkin can famously just end you by chaining 3 command grabs if you're careless (ie. dashing in after the first in order to land the second).

Get good, simple as. Every character has the potential to be busted
smartcoolplayer11 Feb 9, 2023 @ 10:36pm
as a ninja main, its pretty simple. just dont get hit

im hearing a skill issue if you think ninja and robot are bad.

wtf are you talking about, robot is the most broken thing i've ever seen.
he does 1/5 of your health in one grab, at least, on top of that he has annoying setup options like LOIC and can just toggle armor whenever he wants.

You know that is an advantage, right? You understand how turns work in this game, right? They are not simultanious. Ninja has very quick animations on his setups so he usually gets his next turn in time to react to whatever the opponent presses, unless you have for some reason decided to do so way out of position.

Robot is THE most meta character. EVERYONE is playing him and for good reasons. You sure you are playing yomiH and not some other game?

Every time someone talks about the balance of this game every response sounds like a completely different game.

Cowboy being the worst character? I wish I could live in your world. This game will never ever feel properly balanced because it's way more about whats cool than what makes a fair game.

My experience with ninja is getting grappled by robot from any angle. Im new, but its so difficult to tell when it is actually safe to attack.

Broadly speaking, it never is. Outside of combos/punishment, both players in an interaction almost always have some options (different for each move) that will beat any given move the opponent might throw out. The usual gameplan of threatening (and hitting) quickslash (free cancel to avoid getting blown up by armor) and baiting whiffs/blocks still works and threatening substitution with a single shuriken is hard to deal with as robo because of no projectiles/teleports of your own. Just know that if you force pointblank RPS it's in robos favor if he has armor+freecancels and make sure to check if you're in range of fly->boundscheck for air-to-air interactions (consider empty doublejumps to bait resource usage).
