But for the first part of the question, the entity did not want it's existence to be known to the outside world so Tuurngait does not want Phillip to get out. As for Clarence he probably was acting off script and not in a kindly Tuurngait fashion so he had to be eliminated.
What do you think? I'm just going from memory now as I haven't been in these worlds for awhile but that is my feelings about it today.
And I do miss Red.
Also I believe the whole thing with them hunting Philip down was all part of the “hoops” they sent Philip through to test him.
And the puzzles at the end were a sort of final test of philip’s trustworthiness and conviction.
