I absolutely love Unrailed 1 and currently, being finished as compared to 2's early access state, it has some big advantages in-terms of the "campaign" of sorts. I really enjoy the challenge of acquiring each biome's secret items and also love how so many of the areas have such different mechanics to them. Currently, I feel as though Unrailed 2 definitely loses out in the biome category, not just because it currently has fewer, but because aside from the lava-level, most of its biomes don't provide new, fun challenges and instead seem to rely much more heavily on throwing enemies at you that tend to be more of an annoyance than a fun challenge to work around.
Again, Unrailed 2 is currently in early access, so it's reasonable to assume that it'll receive a significant amount of new content over the coming year or two, but currently, I tend to look at Unrailed 1 as the true core experience and Unrailed 2 as more of a different version that, while fun, does not feel like a replacement at this point in time.
Long answer short, You definitely don't need to understand the second, but I would also say this isn't a case where the sequel is just the definitive version of its predecessor.
Regardless of if you get 1, 2, or both, I'm sure you'll have a good time with it!
