Agent was added later when people complained that the campaign wasn't coopable. He's an afterthrought so he can't interact with stuff. Even though it's possible to change that with some modding, I think.
Funny enough, now you're kinda doing the opposite. Agent has separate inventory, so you wouldn't lose anything.
What do you mean we're doing the opposite though. So if we switched at end of chapters we would only lose Ada's weapons not Agents? Still a pretty crappy outcome though, as she barely starts with any arrows (4).
If you play as character 2 and then switch to character 1 then you'll switch inventories. And vice versa.
If you completed Leon's story as Helena and your friend played as Leon, the next time you start playing as Leon you'll start with a vanilla inventory. As people here explained you won't inherit your friend's weapons and items, the game only stores your inventory data for each character individually. So if you never touched certain character yourself, said character will have his/her default inventory.
