No any surprise for me, in 2012, Capcom shared an article about the RE success and they mention the differences of how USA market loved the horror while the Japanesse market had more interest for the characters. And RE6 bringin such big casting...
There's also the stigma over where the series was headed in the west which created the poisoned well aspect. Something I'd wager is almost non-existent in Japan. This is all conjecture, of course, and it sucks we can't get any articles to back it up, but it's interesting stuff nonetheless.
On the flip side, I heard RE7 wasn't as popular in Japan, so that's also a very interesting rumor to investigate.

You can see that the difference is quite notable. However, according to http://www.vgchartz.com/, something simillar happened with RE7 and Europe, alhtough in that case, the difference was not so big. RE7 made it better than RE6 on its debut in Europe. (Obviously, no thanks to me... XD )
Edit: I'm moreover curious what Japenese gamers and reviewers thought of 6. I think that's the main goal of this thread.
