Getting more townies doesn't just require time, it requires space and happiness. Lay down a bunch of Personal Rooms, 3x3 in size. Each can hold one townie. If you've got extra, more can come in if your current population's average happiness is high enough. The easiest way to get happiness is to just give your townies some time off. Heroes are much the same, but they stay in Tavern Rooms (and you'll need a Tavern as well). All these rooms don't cost anything but floor space, so use it as an opportunity to plan ahead.
By the time you reach 20 townies it won't even matter, as every hostile on the surface will be dead just from random confrontation.

I'll try your suggestions.
Any other tips on how to get started, btw?
Definately equip your townies first chance, but do *not* use the auto equip feature when you are just starting.
Omelettes are good if you have access to flint/gravel to start a fire, pie if not. Do not go overboard and cook 20 of everything, stick to 1 food type at first. Move past bread and raw fruit as quickly as possible.
Make sure your stockpiles are defaulted to OFF in your options. Be very cautious about what orders you give them at first. Like setting up a tree farm, one or two bushes at a time so you make sure they aren't wandering across the map.

The game has a very active and helpful community and the forums there contain screenshots for additional information. There's even a whole community devoted just to modding the game files and developing additional content. Some current mods I have installed let me do things like build custom maps, build mines that produce additional stone, or just increase the walking speed of all townies.
Be sure to check out the link below, which contains screenshots of a citybuilding contest they had. It will really kickstart your imagination.

The trouble is that if you build a tavern really early the only hero type you can get is the thief. Those guys are practically useless in the end since they can't wear the good armor and their special ability is only good in that it avoids training monsters to your town.
