Towns

I'm sorry, but...
Beware, the following is written out of pure anger.

I AM TIRED OF THIS GAME. I spent almost two hours to plan out my village, managed to get my first caravan, but still with the same effin' eleven initial townies, despite they having a dinner room comparable to a royal castle's one, and when they seem just to need some time to get everything set up, a werepig, sent from the hellbound mind of whoever programmed that piece of human rear ejections of a NPC, simply popped out of freaking nowhere, and picked townie by townie as they were made of sugar and butter. After managing to kill EXACTLY 10 townies, the last one kicked him ONCE and killed him.. So, with an incomplete town, and exactly ONE SURVIVOR, I quit this game.

Rantings apart, there are some things missing on Towns. First, the ability to refill dug holes. Who has never mistakenly dug a hole on their wheat farm? Second, the difficulty of bringing new townies to your town, requiring what I must assume is about months makes this game too boring at the initial stages. After 2h playing on another world, I still had only 11 townies, explored a dungeon, and had an income of apples and pears. No heroes, no minerals, not even gravel to extract flints from. Heck, I think even Minecraft has more flints than Town per square area XD. Towns just need some rebalancing, speeding up the initial stages of the game. Also, speeding up or slowing down appears to have no effect on the speed the townies do their stuff or walk around. It seems to only affect the ticks running speed, making them eat and sleep more... That outta be fixed.

I'd rate it 8/10.

Terraforming (including filling holes) is slated for the next major patch.

Getting more townies doesn't just require time, it requires space and happiness. Lay down a bunch of Personal Rooms, 3x3 in size. Each can hold one townie. If you've got extra, more can come in if your current population's average happiness is high enough. The easiest way to get happiness is to just give your townies some time off. Heroes are much the same, but they stay in Tavern Rooms (and you'll need a Tavern as well). All these rooms don't cost anything but floor space, so use it as an opportunity to plan ahead.

About this, a shortcut many use is to build up a food supply and turn everybody into a guard so they spend lots of time idle.

Beginner Pro-Tip: Give everyone in your town a stone hammer. You can start making them just a few minutes after the game starts. It's almost as strong as Iron weapons and a single townie can easily solo anything they meet down through lvl 4.

By the time you reach 20 townies it won't even matter, as every hostile on the surface will be dead just from random confrontation.

# of townies = # of personal rooms + happiness (Being allowed to stand around idle is the best) + a day or two ingame time Also, I recommend arming the idiots with some wood armor and a weapon, just in case more werepigs decide to eat all your dudes.

Ah... OK. The game is good enough for me to give it a second try. :D
I'll try your suggestions.
Any other tips on how to get started, btw?

Definately equip your townies first chance, but do *not* use the auto equip feature when you are just starting.

Omelettes are good if you have access to flint/gravel to start a fire, pie if not. Do not go overboard and cook 20 of everything, stick to 1 food type at first. Move past bread and raw fruit as quickly as possible.

Make sure your stockpiles are defaulted to OFF in your options. Be very cautious about what orders you give them at first. Like setting up a tree farm, one or two bushes at a time so you make sure they aren't wandering across the map.

I found that building a tavern and tavern room very early on helps miles. one hero does so much more damage than all the townies together

Feel free to drop by the game's home site for additional help.

http://www.townsgame.com/forums/

The game has a very active and helpful community and the forums there contain screenshots for additional information. There's even a whole community devoted just to modding the game files and developing additional content. Some current mods I have installed let me do things like build custom maps, build mines that produce additional stone, or just increase the walking speed of all townies.

Be sure to check out the link below, which contains screenshots of a citybuilding contest they had. It will really kickstart your imagination.

The trouble is that if you build a tavern really early the only hero type you can get is the thief. Those guys are practically useless in the end since they can't wear the good armor and their special ability is only good in that it avoids training monsters to your town.

Having the crappy item-stealing thief or food hog barbarian are still pretty helpful in your first few towns. They'll keep you mostly safe while you come to understand the game enough to live without heroes, until the situation is ideal.
