Report a translation problem
There is no storyline, no magic, and no monsters (without mods anyway). The quests mostly consist of stuff like "Bring 10 cattle from here to here", "Deliver this letter", or "Go fight these bandits here". The game doesn't ask you to do much, and it doesn't explain its mechanics very well, especially the original game. The player has to decide what their goals are, and when and how to get those goals done, from being a simple mechant or mercenary captain, to a vassal, or being a king.
It is better described as a sandbox RPG. You can do whatever you want, and the AI will not wait around for you to influence the game. Fiefs will change hands, and factions will rise and fall, without your input.
I guess you could sorta compare the combat to Gothic 3, but not really. The closest game that I can think of would be Chivalry, but that's basically a watered down version of the combat the M&B games have.
It can take a while to learn the basics, and it's damn near impossible to master. There are no combos, and you cannot just keep spamming the attack button. Though this varies by what weapon you have, you have 4 types of attack, based on how you move your mouse when you attack. Either a horizontal swipe from left or right, based on how you move your mouse, a thrust if you move your mouse down, and an overhead chop if you move the mouse up before attacking.
Defending is similar, but for your block to succeed, you have to block based on how your opponent is attacking. If it's a thrust, you block low, you block chops high, etc. If you block to your right, and the enemy's attack lands anywhere else, you get hit.
This post doesn't really go into detail about the game. I suggest you try Warband's demo and see if the game is to your liking.
Morrowind is one of the best RPG's ever made.
Gothic is a personal favourite of mine, but especially Gothic 1 - 3 put together has been one of my most memorable experiences. I can't stress enough how great this series is, and even though it's gotten some recognition over the years, the series has always remained a bit of an underdog considering how good it is.
Mount&Blade you must try. It's unlike any other game, unique in almost every way, one of the most fun melee combat systems, even up to this date. And the mods.. my god, the mods! Are! GREAT! But i'd go with Warband, not WFAS.
I know you'll most likely never try Gothic or M&B again because they didn't work for you, but I heavily recommend them. Alternatively keep a look out for GOG (Good Old Games) sales, as GOG versions of games are always optimized to work on modern systems.
If you do play Gothic, try to start with the first. Ignore the bad graphics, as starting at Gothic 1 will add so much more fun and depth to the 2nd and 3rd games. Stop at Gothic 3, don't ever play "Arcania: Gothic 4". It's made by different developers and it shows. They ignored every single aspect that made the Gothic series so great, and turned it into the most generic open world RPG, ever.

Your friend is a fool. Morrowind is one of my favorite games ever made. As long as you can get past the dice rolling based combat, you'll love it. Bethesda hasn't made a better world or written a better story since Morrowind.
The dialogue is only one fourth the important information in the world. Once you find the right people, you can hear all sorts of interesting things. The rest you'll find in books, dungeons, guilds and quests. You really have to live in the world of Morrowind for a while before you are deemed important enough to get to the good stuff.
Unlike Skyrim, where you're super specially important in the first thirty minutes and kill a dragon in the first hour.
