That is... the mentality. An animation teacher of mine summed the attitude up, "you use Unity because you're making games", "you use an engine like CryEngine when you're serious.".
The fbx support is only going to improve in time. I don't know who convinced the CryEngine management that there are other modelers besides those from Autodesk, but I am sure glad they did. Shade Pro and SideFX Houdini come to mind immediately as alternative modelers.
So, yea for fbx!
Your other options may include trying to convince either okino ( http://www.okino.com/conv/filefrmt.htm ) to carry proprietary cry formats, or Ultimate Unwrap 3D ( http://www.unwrap3d.com/u3d/formats.aspx ) to carry proprietary cry formats, or the developer of your modeler of choice to carry proprietary cry formats.
