CryEngine is not really turned for RTS games, so if you choose it, you'll need to make a lot of changes to the engine itself, but its the same thing for Unity and Unreal. The main problem with CryEngine is the learning curve and since you dont seem to be experienced (sorry if I'm wrong) in game development, you'll need to spend a lot of time learning how stuff works and how the engine is structured.
I dont have any experience with Unreal but I've read thats powerful and relatively easy to learn. But the price...
Unity I think its the most easy to get into, I think, and it has a great asset store, but its not as powerful as the other two and again the price doesnt help.
Digital tutors has a great blog post about these 3 engines with useful information, here: http://blog.digitaltutors.com/unity-udk-cryengine-game-engine-choose/
There is a 4th alternative, which is you make engine yourself. Its problaby the harder choice but you'll learn more about game development than any other choice and how/why stuff works the way it does.
Cryengine is only 10 a month but if you do nto pay for the month oyu loose access to the tools
Unreal is 20 a month and if you do not pay you only miss out on the updats you cans till use the tool set. Some people buy a month cancel and will upgrade every few months, which makes htis cheaper than cryengine in that reguard
Hopefully someone can tell you how much of the source code you get to mess with in Cryemgine, I know in unreal you have access to all of it.
Unity migh tbe the easiest to get set up for an RTS style game.
Both UE 4 adn Unity have way more learnign resouces than cryengine
With all that said I think what you should do is
1. download unity free
2. Download cryengine 3.5 (the free one)
3. Lookat some videos of UE 4 (UE3 is still free but to different from the 4 to compare)
Optional spend 30 and get 1 month of cry engine and the current build of UE 4
See which one you like and which is best for you.
With that said, now I got to be that dude that people do not like. Becouse I got to tell you a RTS isa big project, and a lot to take on for someone new to game development. You will probably be better served startign with something much simplier.
I have another question:
If I want to make something like Dragon Quest 8, open world RPG that if you go straight you can come back to where you were at, just like the actual Earth, do I need to mess around with CryEngine?
