Is the Uplay launcher needed to play or just a login in the game?

It's great that Ubisoft decided to come back to Steam, but do we still need to install their launcher Uplay? If not that's great and you might have finally found a buyer in me here on Steam.

Can anyone who bought the game here on Steam confirm that just the game is installed and needed to run?
