Depends on what you mean by grind. do you have to do optional content to stay level-scaled with the main story? No you don't.
Is the main story a grind to complete itself? very much yes. It is nearly 200 hours long.

90hrs in and feels like I've barely scratched the surface of the content in this game, so its epic and lengthy if that's what your asking. It's not grindy like World of Warcraft or most older JRPGs though, killing enemies just for exp so you can move to the next area. There's a variety of things to do and a lot of it is truly optional.

By the way I wanted to play Mirage before Valhalla but was warned that there's a massive spoiler for Valhalla at the end of Mirage. Maybe that won't bother you, but just though I'd give a heads up.

The base game has like 750 quests, 86 of those are story quests.

I am 140hrs in, have only completed 2 pledges and I'm lvl 77 on Nightmare.

I have won battles, raids and quests lvl 200+

If you don't like Vikings or Anglo Saxon England then you will grow tired of this game.

The game is a marathon, if you try and sprint it, you'll burn out before you reach the end.

A lot of my playtime involves Fishing, hunting, building my settlement, relic hunting, scouting, being a thief, exploring, river raids, open world raids and doing mysteries which are basically side quests.

I haven't had to grind for anything yet... needing raw materials from Raids has been my only real need but quite a few I had to retreat as the Saxons were too heavily defended.

Its addictive as hell

Nah, grinding like hell, I'm 380 hours and still haven't got the "swordfish" (final reward for fishing).

the only thing that needs grinding : titanium, you need to go on several titanium runs to maxupgrade more than 4-5 armour sets
