Rather nowadays they link Steam account/licenses to your Connect account. Which sometimes has issues, as a lot of players struggling with Anno 1800 right now will be able to tell you.
Having Connect running prior to launching the game seems to have helped a few, sometimes a plain old restart of steam/connect also is all that's needed.
Or there's perhaps an issue with the first launch and then it works with second launch.
For me it worked at second launch with ubi connect I had quit and launch from steam then select launch option: free valhalla.
I've been wanting to buy the game. But, given the MIXED reviews, I've been hesitant to do so. Given my current experience with AC: Origins (I"m only Lvl 8) and unimpressed with Origin's pay-to-advance model (or grind it out), I've really been hesitant to try AC: Valhala. This free weekend will help me decide.
The shortcut allows not bother with both clients at least visually.
EDIT:
You probably had a problem unsolved with Origins, because level up is ultra fast.
In Odyssey, it's less fast to level 5 but after it speed up, you just need not only focus on main story, that's impossible with Odyssey but plenty side quests are very good. With Origins at first you need also make secondary quests but later you can rush last third and make mostly only the main story stuff.
Overall it's not games you play just for the main story, if that's your objective they won't match and probably valhalla neither. For Origins/Odyssey, in my opinion Odyssey is much better.
For having computer in offline mode, it's more complex, at least last time I really checked with Odyssey and disconnect internet. You need first activate the offline mode in ubi connect when the game isn't launch. But you can do that only if online (perhaps it changed?). Then you can play offline.
EDIT:
But I just tried with Valhalla free version and the game free version doesn't work when ubi connect is in offline mode (computer still plugged on internet). Perhaps a problem specific with free version, or some bug around, I can't say for Valhalla non free version.
For any Ubisoft title, free or otherwise, you do need to be online for first launch so it can link correctly to your Ubisoft account. Dorok based on your description it sounds like you've launched the free version for the first time whilst in offline mode which is the issue. It should work in offline mode however after being online for first time launch.
Thanks,
