Game crashes when taking a photo
After an extensive session (3+ hours) whenever I try to take a photo the game just crashes to desktop without any error message popping out and it's getting annoying.
I wanna take cool pictures, Bugi$oft

Do you mean take a photo with Steam's key, or within the program using the photo mode? I use the screenshot button, never had an issue. Is your RAM large enough to store the photo? Weird.

Yes, it crashes when taking a photo through Steam. Have it mapped in my Xbox controller but also crashes when taping F12. I have 16gb of ram so higly doubt it's a ram related issue

Thie idea that "not enough RAM" could explain a crash while taking a screenshot is a bit silly. considering that RAM is measured in GB while screenshots just take a few MB even on the highest resolution and quality.

The problem has been reported a few times here. I also had it myself - I tried to take a screenshot twice, using the respective key defined in Steam (F12), and both times the game crashed immediately. I never investigated further though, it's not an important function for me. I'm on an RTX 4090, Ryzen 7 7700X, 32GB DDR5-6000 RAM CL30, hundreds of GB free on both my drives. It's not the hardware.

Sadly, I don't remember any solution from the last times this has been discussed here.

if there's a memory bleed, or an overflow error in the processing of an image in the video card, it can cause a crash; a service error can cause a crash, and 1,001 other things, so it;s hard to just rule out hardware.
I can't address crashes, they don't happen for me, but from what I read it is rare that the program doesn't simply recover on reload so you can get back in. I also have used a screen grabber program such as Snap 15 (Ashampoo.com) and since they work outside the running game software, that might enable you to take pix.

I have 32 GB of system RAM (which the game never fully uses), and my graphics card has 24 GB of VRAM (which the game also never fully uses). If you see any realistic chance how a screenshot with (at worst) perhaps 50 *Mega*bytes of data could cause "an overflow error" in that scenario, then I would really like to hear the details.

Additionally - I currently have 5,500 games installed on this machine that - as far as I know - all do not crash when taking screenshots. Assassin's Creed Valhalla is the only one that ever did. Feel free to suggest one to try if you think it has the same issue. If this were a hardware issue (or a driver issue, which would be a bit less nonsensical), then why would only AC Valhalla trigger it? (I haven't explicitly tried out other Ubisoft games though, so it could be an issue with Ubisoft Connect rather than AC Valhalla.)

That said, Ubisoft have said that they "are aware" of F12 causing crashes as far back as 2020. They just never provided a solution.

As far as I have been able to tell, it's the ubi connect that causes the crash, and does appear to be a memory leak of some sort, because in the before-steam days you could take a screenshot early in your session with no crash but not later - never bothered to figure out values for early and later. With steam, I mapped the ubi connect screenshot key to something else I never used in ACV and have taken hundreds of screenshots in steam since and have not had that issue.

Other random crashes, but not that one.

Solved by disabling the Uplay / Ubisoft connect interface while in-game

lmao, this is still an ongoing issue.

Game is broken and they don't fix that issue.
It's 2023.06.18 now and this issue is still ongoing! You are not alone. I have 32GB RAM too.

its a known fact the using steam to do screens will ctd the game. even having the steam overlay running will make the game rendomly ctd... turn all overlays off...if you need taking pic´s do it with the ingame options.. not perfect.. but no ctd..
