Immersive Open World: RDR2 vs AC Valhalla
So, I'm trying to decide on a big open-world game to get on the Spring Sale, to tide me over until Zelda BOTW2 (my Zelda-loving sister will get first dibs on the cartridge). It's between RDR2 and AC Valhalla. From what I've heard, RDR2 is in principle a better game, with a more coherent story and more lively and immersive world, compared to the icon-fest that is Ubisoft games. However, its not clear-cut for me, because Valhalla has several things that fit my preferences. Vikings is a much more interesting theme to me than cowboys (only samurai are better); it has heavier RPG mechanics and skill progression; and has GeForce Now support (so I can remote-desktop a 4080 and max everything out).

Or should I just get both (I'm not short of cash), or go back to Witcher 3 since I didn't play past White Orchard the first time, it has Gwent, and there's a new update.

RDR 2 is the most complete open world if have ever played and there is still nothing better on the market.

however, there are of course solid open world games from other studios out there. Watch Dogs 2 is great and Valhalla is not bad either.

RDR2 is okay but it controls poorly, sluggish aiming. Hunting and fishing, other side stuff is done really well but most of the game is a very basic cover shooter in open world. There are no RPG mechanics and most of what you do ends up being useless. Story is good at first but disappointing in the end.

Valhalla looks slightly worse, but runs very well and controls are excellent. Action is more varied, lots of combat, lots of puzzle stuff in side content, and everything you do upgrades your character or your settlement.

They both share some similarities, like most side quests are being replaced with world events so your quest log is always short, there's a focus on building your town and have interaction with your crew. Missions are told through story arcs.

If you're interested in viking stuff I suggest playing Valhalla. For cowboy stuff RDR.

I would absolutely love to play GoT if it ever comes to PC.

if cash isnt an issiue for you get both. Red dead redemption is great, great story, great open world, so many things to do, if you like western, its YOUR game. Just stay away from red dead online or at least expect to see red dead online as a "fun for a few hours" thing. RDO has no replayabillity. RDR2 however you can replay it and always explore new stuff, to this day, after all those years i see videos from side events in rdo that i myself never saw. And the AI in the game deserves to be mentioned too. Its actually dynamic. Like enemys will seek out covers and high spots dynamicly in the enviornment in order to get a stand against you. It makes it feel like a real western experience, i find its a great game! Also i'd like to add rdr2 is like a simulator rather than an only action story game. It has loads of action but it also has loads of other stuff.. So many dozens of animals i have never seen in 1 game. And you can interact with every single npc ever, even when they are not bound to quests.

AC valhalla does many things right that previous ac games have done alredy, just new and maybe more polished, it actually does some things better. Just as an example, the shantys in Black flag were a pain, i didnt bother. But the notes you gonna catch here are way smoother to follow AND they give you a better reward imho.
Ofc the AI doesnt really compete with red dead redemptions AI, i would say anyway RDR2 beats many games in many cases. But you really have to like western, if you dont like western at all safe your money.
Valhalla has also great storys and side quests, not as dynamic or "alive" as Rdr2 in my opinion but its one of the better ac games actually. imho. And it brings tons of new, creative stuff. Ubisoft can still surprise.

Absolutely recommend GoT. Worth every dollar spent and more. Best PS exclusive imo. Plus it has coop Legends mode.

I have not beaten either game. Spent a dozen or so hours in both doing a lot of exploration. But here are my thoughts:

(NB, I use an XBox One controller. Playing a game like this on controller is non negotiable for me.) I HATE the controls in RDR2. They are awful. And I get it that there is supposed to be some weight and realism to it, but the controls blow ass. I do not have similar problems with controls on other "realistic" games, or any serious game that I can think of.

I also do not love cowboys and wild west settings particularly.

AC Valhalla easily has RDR2 beat on those counts.

Everything else, I say RDR2 stomps AC Valhalla on. Also, AC Valhalla randomly crashes a lot after departing the introductory area. So that is a knock against it too. The RPG elements are kinda middling and the upgrade systems in RDR2 are more immersive and gratifying to do, IMO.

Story. Hard to say as I have not completed or gotten very far with either, but RDR2 easily has me more interested. I care much more about the characters as well in RDR2 as opposed to AC.

If immersion is the major selling point especially, RDR2 really does it better.

Now, one last question; do you think either game will ever go below a 67% discount in the near future? They've posted at that sale price for about a year now.

Hard to say. I'd look toward the summer or winter sale. Also around when the next Assassin's Creed releases for Valhalla.

But for under $20 for either, if you're interested in them and the negatives about the games aren't too big of a deal, these are a lot of bang for the buck.

Summer sale is a pretty long time; I was just checking it wouldn't suddenly get discounted more right after the spring sale.

I got a lot of games on the spring sale, including Kingdom Come Deliverence, so I'm not exactly hankering for a big open-world game. I think I'll wait till the end of April when my current school term ends. Then, I'll be at my parent's house with my gaming PC and good internet 24/7, and I'll have plenty of free time. I've seen that both these games go on sale pretty regularly.

RDR2 is a perfectt masterpiece. Been gaming over 35 years and nothing touches it. Valhalla is very nice as well. Not quite as nice and it crashes. ALOT the further you get in game. Never had anything but amazement from RDR2.
Valhalla would be great except for it's instability, which has been ignored since release. It's "broken" sorta

I was under the impression you were looking for something to tide you over for Legend of Zelda, and were looking for a big, open, immersive game. I mentioned those particular events in that those seem the most likely for a deeper price drop, if it is to occur (not that I necessarily think they will).

This price point, yeah, I wouldn't sweat it if you don't need something/these right now as they'll go on sale again, probably within a month, at most, the summer sale in three months.
Go0lden_Archer 22. mar. 2023 kl. 20:49
RDR2 if you want to immerse yourself. AC Valhalla if you want a semi-viking person running around collecting chests, and trying not to look like a clown with most of the ingame gear being clown fest instead of normal gear of the time period.
