Assassin's Creed Valhalla

Assassin's Creed Valhalla

Draw Distance Bad, Odyssey Lore better than Valhalla
Right away the poor draw distance is noticeable. Models and textures don't fully render until you get fairly close or they don't render properly at all. I got my graphics settings at the max and a 3080Ti. It's not a hardware problem. Other people and on other consoles reported the same thing.

Either Ubisoft got lazy and didn't do much research, cut a bunch of lore out because of woke sensitivity, or the Nordic/Viking era doesn't lend well to the Assassin's Creed genre. So with Odyssey, the Greek lore and culture has so much material to work with. The Greeks built huge, glorious, cities with famous monuments that are still standing today. The Greeks have a depth of mythology. Lots of gods and religious figures.
When you start out in Valhalla everything is dark and gloomy. Bunch of tiny villages. Not much in the way of architecture just a bunch of mud huts, shacks, tiny fishing villages.

I've progressed to the point in the story after learning assassinations. I hope it improves but I don't have much hope. The game is still decent but in terms of culture, history, lore, and immersion Odyssey is the peak of the AC series.

The far distance has nothing to do with assassinations; journey on.

The weapons, and armor are absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bad. It doesn't get better. At least not the axes & shields. Axes too big, round shields Evior can use are too small even though there are hundreds of appropriately sized shields hanging all over the place, lying around on the ground, horrible fantasy large shields. Even the shape of the swords is off.

They are that way so you have choices and improvements and combat styles to enhance, and upgrade, etc. To do a realistic game, why aren't you complaining about fast-travel, which I can firmly assure you the Vikings did not have? OR tattoos - no viking could switch tattoos at a shop, or drink a potion and visit the gods, and so on and so forth... sorry the shields aren't to your style, but perhaps you can see how/why they are what they are? Also, you know, in real life there was little violence in that age, it was mostly moving in and fitting in, and sharing technology and trying to stay healthy. Very little need of assassins in those days, and, besides; Viking assassins? Who's kidding who here? LOL!

or drink a potion and visit the gods,

Then you're not drinking the right potions, my friend. XD

Sorry, I meant to make the point that comments on the "unrealistic" aspects of most any game always requires pressing the F button, FOCUS on what you're saying; if one is bothered by the size of a shield, how does one then feel just fine about drinking a potion and going to fight the gods?
{imagines conversation}
"I've fast-traveled all over these lands, and everywhere I look, I see shields I cannot pick up!" "I heal by eating berries, and can save my game before I do anything dangerous, but I just can't stand using an historically inaccurate shield!"

OK, OK, we hear you! :steamhappy: That's what I was trying to get at, sorry.

I was joking: if you think it is unrealistic then irl you must not be drinking good enough potions to see the gods. You need to drink harder stuff. 😅

Draw distance is fine, it's game's TAA that blurrs it. The only fix is render scale above 100%.

Maybe. There’s no option to turn off AA. There’s only low, medium and high.

This is arguably the most disconnected story from the main Assassin plot points. You encounter Assassins, encounter the pre-Templars, but you are part of neither.

You're a viking, you were gifted a hidden blade, not inducted to the order, or even given an explanation of it all, and want to conquer England. The pre-Templar Order is just in your way.

It's a viking game with the Assassin's Creed requirements shoehorned in. It's hardly an Assassin's Creed game gameplay wise. Or even plot wise really. The modern story does see some development, sure, but it's only significant right at the end.

The short of it is that this is a viking game that had Assassin's Creed shoved into it. Remove all of the modern story, remove the Assassins, replace the hidden blade with a dagger, and nothing will change.

...and? That has nothing to do with the simple fact it's a great game to enjoy. Not pure AC. got it. Still, best game by Ubi, in my opinion, for me! Super happy I bought it.

Yeah, I kinda don't give a ♥♥♥♥ about the AC stuff other than playing in different time periods. I don't care at all about the AC storyline or continuity. The self contained story I am somewhat invested in.

Viking Raiders and stealthy Assassins are two different directions to take the game. Valhalla is good enough to be an AC game but I'm disappointed that it doesn't match or exceed Odyssey. The game just feels rushed. I bet you Ubisoft will blame it on the virus even though it was well in development before then. Something is just off about Valhalla. I'm still near the beginning of the story so maybe it gets better.

I like ancient Greek stuff more than viking stuff. This game crashes a lot, Odyssey doesn't. Valhalla's sound, particularly the audio quality of voice acting, is inconsistent with it often enough being bad.

Other than that, I'd say Valhalla is shaping up to be much preferable to Odyssey for me. I think this is a better game and, other than in those specific capacities/problem areas I mentioned above, I have more fun while playing it than Odyssey.

I hear all this about how Odyssey is so much better, but outside of those particular reasons, why?
