And now im thinking in getting Origins too
Too many games on sale! I think I will just keep playing Valhalla so I don't get distracted. It's more open world and slower pace, but that's what I like about it.
If you go Odyssey, everyone says good things about it and there are achievements!
In a lot of ways Valhalla took the complaints in Odyssey and made changes to try to fix them.
Odyssey constantly spews out useless randomly generated equipment that gets annoying to get rid of, while Valhalla only has pre-determined equipment that can be upgraded if u like it. The cons of Valhalla's approach is that it feels like there's a lot less meaningful rewards in the game. Yes there's a decent amount of equipment to find in the game but they're still spread out in a massive world and a lot of the rewards in this game are either experience or stuff u use to upgrade equipment. Also, it is pretty resource intensively to upgrade other gear up to the level of ur current gear. Luckily there are transmogs in both games (I believe). I believe u can also upgrade stuff in Odyssey but there was a reason why u didnt really do that (I dont remember lol).
There's a lot less side quests in Valhalla than Odyssey but Valhalla replaced most of them with little side events/mysteries. They tend to be much more self contained little events that Eivor helps out with.
Odyssey explores the beautiful Greek islands and has ship combat. Valhalla explores the English countryside, which is okay but... Well it's England. There's still a ship but there's no real ship combat. There's a lot more ground terrain with rivers or mountains blocking the way so navigating that is a bit more annoying, while in Odyssey u're spending a lot more time AFK as ur ship or mount auto paths to a place, relatively unhindered.
Both games are clearly designed towards pushing players towards timesavers and feel pretty unrewarding. However, Valhalla does a far better job of keeping the character leveled up through the story while Odyssey does require u to do more side content to keep up. I will say that Valhalla feels super easy compared to Odyssey.
In Odyssey, u are a demi-god, a legend in the making. There's a lot more weird magic and mythos in this game and your character is reflected in that. U dnt have a stamina bar and the abilities are crazier. In Valhalla u are a Viking whose still pretty dang powerful and there is still some magic/ hallucinations showing u magic (lol) but it's not quite the same as in Odyssey. Also, there's a stamina bar.
In Odyssey there's an annoying bounty system where mercenaries start chasing u if u do basically anything. That's kinda fine until u realize that as u kill more mercenaries they send stronger ones at u. As the game has RPG elements, the mercenaries eventually just have a massive HP pool and easily one shoot u. Eventually, u'll be so high level/overpowered that u can beat all the mercenaries but then the game just keeps generating more of them and send them at u until u clear the wanted level. That gets super annoying. Valhalla completely removes the bounty system and a hold over of it is just Zealots wandering around the place. Depending on how u progress the story the Zealots might actively attack u on sight or just pass by u but they dnt really chase u lik the mercenaries do.
Odyssey has u exist as a mercenary during a war between Sparta and Athens. U can basically slaughter or help either side. Territory is exchanged hands with or without ur input. It sounds impressive but the implementation is a bit lackluster but it's still better than Ubisoft's attempt at being a Viking. Yes u do go on raids but a lot of the times it feels like u attack a village to steal their dinner and the coins between their cushions. Plus, I stopped raiding with my crew once I realized u dnt get exp for the kills they get/steal from u. I basically slaughter everything myself and THEN call in my crew to loot. Kinda ruins the moment. Also, u can't kill innocents in Valhalla while u can in Odyssey. It's really annoying to accidentally do it in Valhalla.
Finally, there's no New game plus in Valhalla, while there is in Odyessy.
I'm probably missing more but these are generally what I think is important.
I didn't think I would enjoy the focus of Valhalla (dark age Vikings and England) *as much as* ancient Egypt and ancient Greece, but I certainly am. Moreover, Valhalla's story has really grabbed me and I find the new gaming mechanics compelling. There's new stuff here that I haven't seen in previous AC games that I've played, of note is the settlement features.
I really like that. While nowhere near as detailed as RDR 2's camp I enjoy that sense of community that it brings having a home base full of friends and allies.
I think you should ultimately play both (as well as Origins if you haven't played that). Why are you commiting to never getting the one you don't select now? I would play Origins, followed by Odyssey, first, then Valhalla as there's a refinement in gameplay over time.
If you're truly committed to only playing one then I would recommended Valhalla. (BTW if Achievements are important to you then you should be aware that Valhalla doesn't include them on Steam. It's a big controversy.) But, again, I think Odyssey is great too and should you want to eventually play both then I would go in release order: Odyssey then Valhalla. (And, again, Origins before that if you haven't played that yet either).
i hope i switched off that ubiconnect overlay to origins when i finished playing it, because it left a message in the top right about an unsupported software driver and needs updating.
after the initial 6 hours on Origins and the 16 hours on valhalla the free version, i'm pretty sure the deluxe version i brought works without issue on proton 7.0-5 as well.
so was i, but it costs more than origins so that went out the window on the initial choice of game. i would have liked to have played edward again, raiding, reaving, pillaging and stealing more than you can shake a hook at or walk on a wooden peg leg while reading poetry of the high seas as well.
Naval Action is good for a generic 18th century fight, but it lack the character of Adewale, Edward and the crew singing shanties, while at the same time avoiding cannon fire and mortar fire from 3rd and 1st rates in ACBF.
Do it! And play them in order because the graphics and mechanics are refined a bit over time. They're all a lot of fun. I also learned a lot of historical stuff I didn't know about such as about ancient Egyptian Gods and beliefs. It might sound silly but playing games like these set in historical times makes the people who lived in these times seem more real and less abstract to me. Of course I understand it's a game and so gives a quite limited perspective but, still, it sparks my imagination.
Black Flag doesn't work on ultrawide. I still kept it to play on my Steam Deck but it just didn't grab me like Origins and Odyssey did (and like Valhalla is grabbing me now).
If they would do a remaster, updating the graphics and refine the gameplay including QoL improvements then I would love to continue playing it. Or maybe I'll have to give it another go sometime. A lot of people swear by it though so I believe my opinion on BF is not so common.
I did have a couple side mysteries that were kinda silly. But for the size of this game, I don't expect each and everyone to be more than they are. Plus the cooler stuff I find well makes up for it.
Still, here is my goal since sales price are so good right now.
I'm going with Syndicate because of the setting. It also has a grappling hook and tries to be different. I want to check out Jack the Ripper even though I know he is a short play. Plus I heard the day and night settings are very nice.
So Steam credit isn't burning in my pocket, I think I will get the gold edition. Then I heard you have to buy The Dreadful Crimes separate. Most people are saying it's the best DLC so I gotta check it out.
For a $20 Steam card, this sounds doable for myself.
And Assassin's Creed Valhalla has better dlc's
Owe I'm returning to Odyssey when I exhaust all endings with Assassin's Creed Valhalla
As of now this is how I see them
1 - Origins
2 - Valhalla
3 - Odyssey
I'd pick all 3 of them and play whenever you are able to. What I hated most about Odyssey was the Bounty feature as it was rather annoying after a few hours, and the inventory was a cluttered mess.
Skill Tree I liked most in Origins, Abilities were best in Odyssey, Inventory best in Valhalla. All of them have their "best" and their "worse" but for sure are worth a playthrough in order, all 3 of them play very simiarly.
