Reach your longship mission

Just started out the game and now I'm at this mission where I need to reach my longship with my crew. The problem here is that every time I get out of the building and the enemies start attacking, my crew is nowhere to be found. They stay hidden in the building and don't help me fight. How do I get them to fight with me???

this happens sometimes, and it happens during the monastery's raids, you'll be trying to open a big gold church chest and your raid companion's are either running around breaking boxes etc ignoring you

I sometimes have to completely exit the church and re-enter it to get help to loot the big gold chest

my second in command lieutenant stands there with his axe on his shoulder watching everyone raid

The storyline recruitable raiders are a bit better in raids, but take to long to to assemble

Your crew goes and does there own thing. They are not tied to you.

Oh that was some sh**, it took me three attempts to beat that settlement.

My advise is to hurry to the left once you're out of the building, sprint up to that wall/fence, deal with that one guard up there quickly, your men - once out of the building - should assist you in battle but reluctantly, avoid groups of opponents, from up there let them come, beat them one by one or at least from higher ground, press [Shift]+[attack] for heavy attack and press H once your health is low, once the the first and second waves are dealt with, push V to mark more enemies, pull them closer one by one if possible, once the settlement is thinned out enough, take care of the rest one by one and look for your ship from there.
