speaking of bonus stages, is it a bug that three gold's in a row on endless opens up some kind of mangled world, which if you click anything zooms out and you lose?

It's not a bug... it's simulating a bug. Apparently there is some combination to win.

I don't think you earn anything in particular, they're just there for fun. I've noticed (at least in chapter 1) that some of the bonus rounds overlap. Can't seem to "win" any of them. Could be hideously wrong though. :/

Well, the bonus rounds are there to prove to you that the game can, in fact, get even weirder. You don't really get anything for beating them, just a virtual pat on the back.
