A Combat system? You need an RPG or hack&slash elements?
You haven't played the game yet, man...
Redo a demo?
its just not your type of game.. i havent played the demo of this yet but i played the original for GZDOOM and it was ♥♥♥♥♥♥ great.
what??no your weapon dose not break before an enemy appears. it breaks if you use it to much..also you can repair it.
I agree that, a lot of horror games are from the action genre, but it doesn't mean all horror games necessarily need to be Resident Evil to be interesting.
Your first weapon conveniently breaking before the first enemy encouter is meant to teach you two things:
-Your weapons do break, and quite easily, but reparing/crafting them is not easy
-You are meant to use them only in absolute necessity. You are weak, you are not supposed to fight the monsters head on. They are much, much more powerful than you. And there is a story reason for this, but I won't spoil you. You are just meant to do your best to survive. Which is the true meaning of "survival horror".
When it comes to the hunger meter, that's actually because Total Chaos has more survival mechanics than most survival horror games. Actually, the OG mod also has a radioactivity meter and you were supposed to cook stuff to avoid getting radiated.
Personnally, the DooM 2 mod version of Total Chaos is one of the hardest, darkest and most interesting horror games I've played in my life. To me, Total Chaos is also one of the most terrifying games I've played, it's far more intense and stressful than any Silent Hill game. It relentlessly clings to your mind and barely let you any minute to breathe. You can feel it oozing by every orifice.
Horror games and movies are pretty much a passion of mine, so it's pretty rare when I'm genuinely unsettled by one. Total Chaos always make me feel... weird. At the same time I feel very uncomfortable and stressed when playing it, but I'm so fascinated by it at the same time. I still can't wrap my head around the fact the mod is a full fledged horror game in a free DooM 2 mod encasing, and an incredible at taht.
There is a reason why the mod is often said to be one of the best if not the best DooM 2 mod. And this UE5 remake is even more nightmarish.
The food meter does seem tacked on for this version, and even the OG somewhat despite also having radiation to contend with with most food items. But it also at least serves to buff your Stamina allowing for faster regen, more dodging and more frequent charge attacks. The new throwable system makes the remake even easier. It also somewhat serves to punish spamming attacks since getting tired increases hunger faster, and also due to certain medicines having an offset to their benefits by making you hungry when you use them you have to pay attention to that as well.
Crafting is also easy and important for repairing or remaking weapons, and it's only the very first one you discover that breaks so fast. It was found premade so obviously already used, and also serves to teach you the mechanic. OG game didn't require a crafting bench though, kind of a pointless addition imo. You could just craft anywhere.
OG also didn't really have puzzles, mostly just keys and switches.
The game isn't UE5 anymore, it's Unity now. Kind of unfortunate because UE5 despite its flaws would have looked WAY better, but it is what it is.
The OG and likely this new one is scary almost primarily due to its incredible sound design, which almost never lets you breathe as stated above. It is very unsettling, has a decent story, has decent level design and pretty cool worldbuilding. OG even has a NG+ mode with a crazy stalker enemy added to areas while also giving you a Super Shotgun. Overall it's a great survival horror experience with combat that does force you to think about things like pathing enemies into your attacks, since it's not a full on hack and slash.
