How do i go about making custom assets myself?
sorry if this is a poor question, but a lot of the time i hear that i need to create my own assets to make my game unique, is it something i do within this software? or is it with other pc software and import it in? or something else?

Paint .net is also good. I consider it more simple than GIMP but powerful all the same. It isn't open source unfortunately though but it is free. http://www.getpaint.net/
Open source? is that important? if its not open source does that mean any assets i created i wouldnt be able to use in a commercial game?
No it isn't that. Some people just choose to use Open Source when possible. That's all.

And yes you can use Paint .NET for commercial use. (http://www.getpaint.net/license.html) Check out the first question.

Do you know of any quick tutorial videos on youtube or elsewhere showing somevreate an assetin paint or gimp and importing it into rpgmaker and then showing how to place said creation in it?

ShogunDarius,

The tutorial you need to make the art would depend on what program you use. And to be honest, any basic program that allows you to 'paint' pixel by pixel works. (I have seen some down right amazing work done with MS paint, time consuming no doubt, but amazing none the less.) You will also probably want to look some pixel focused tutorials. Pixel Joint[www.pixeljoint.com] has several good tutorials from some very VERY skilled pixel artists.

Importing the files into RPG Maker VX Ace requires you to put the custom content into the correct folder in your game folder. A lot of details can be found at the offical RPG Maker[www.rpgmakerweb.com] site. This page even gives some basic break downs of how large a 'sheet' needs to be in order to function correctly. (There is a better tutorial that explains auto tiles a lot better somewhere. But I cannot seem to find it right now.)

However, I will assume you are new to RPG Maker and would suggest you focus on learning the system's core capabilities with the default graphics. Yes custom graphics are a big plus to any game made with the program. However... they won't over shadow a poor understanding of the system (badly placed events, lack luster story, poorly implemented scripts (if used) and so forth). Do some practicing and learning (graphic wise) on the side. But do not worry about custom content just yet.
