How do i go about making custom assets myself?
sorry if this is a poor question, but a lot of the time i hear that i need to create my own assets to make my game unique, is it something i do within this software? or is it with other pc software and import it in? or something else?

You're going to have to make those with some other program, then import them.

It DOES have a character generator (with certain limitations), but if you want your own unique tiles, battlers, pictures, panoramas, or music, then you're going to have to make them yourself with another program, import what someone else has already made, or get someone else to help you.

any recommended programs?

I've used MS Paint when I'm desperate to make or alter something, but I'm really the wrong person to ask about drawing/music. I'm far more into writing and coding (both of which are perfectly doable in RM itself).

Don't worry, though. I'm sure the artists around here will come along to tell you more about doing THEIR side of things.

It really depends on what kind of assets you're making. If it's graphics like painted tilesets, it helps to have an art program with transparency and layers (such as Photoshop). If it's pure pixel art, programs like Graphics Gale or even MS Paint.

Also note that there are a lot of great artists in the community ( http://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/ ) who share free resources that you can use to help customize your game. :)

well i am not a very good drawer and tbh i'd hope in the long run that i could sell my game in the future so i'm assuming that limits my options to making custom asssets myself

Not necessarily. Most commercial games are made by teams of people, so you could team up with an artist or two to help you out. Of course, you'd have to pay and/or share your profits with them, as well.

well is there any software that sold on steam that i could use? and there be no issue with that softwares dev if assets i made eouldnt be an issue in a commercial game?

You might want to try out Graphicsgale and get your hands on every pixel art tutorial you can find. I know that's what I'm going to do when I really get into RM.

Pixel Art - Graphicsgale
Editing/everything else art related - Photoshop/GIMP
Music - FL Studio + Audacity

You don´t need to buy anything Program related. Just go through some tutorials and use Photofiltre 7 and/or Gimp. Both are free and both have a layer option. Photofiltre is a more simple program for less complicated work and gimp is more advanced and complicated. I use both. depending on the work to do.

Paint .net is also good. I consider it more simple than GIMP but powerful all the same. It isn't open source unfortunately though but it is free. http://www.getpaint.net/

Yes, Paint .NET is also a good choice.

Open source? is that important? if its not open source does that mean any assets i created i wouldnt be able to use in a commercial game?

I use GIMP, it's free, has transparency/layers and it can do pixel art.

Everything you need for RPG maker.
