Custom Battle Mechanics?
I'm aware that you can use scripting to make some interesting changes to the mechanics of the games you make with this. I'm just curious how different you can make things...

More specifically... is it possible to make combat that works similar to the way combat works in the Grandia series or the Atelier Iris series?

Or is combat always going to end up being like in Final Fantasy even with scripting?

Hmmm....

You should ask LoneWolfDon he is master of scripts here...

But... hmm... Grandia... it would be very hard... I'm not sure if scripts like this exists... there should be some for tactical rpg.. that's closest I can think of...

Atelier Iris looks rather similar to FF (never played it before) but take a look at this:

you won't find script for that... but it just proves that it is possible...

Most of things would be possible... but some are harder to make than others...

Oh... and about FF... normal RPG Maker battles do not look like FF :P

Thanks for the information.

Yeah that image you posted is pretty close to the Atelier Iris system. I should have been more specific in my question, but whenever I do that no one ever reads or answers my posts.

What I meant by the Atelier Iris system was mostly regarding turn orders. In most old school turn based RPG's combat order was either each player character goes in order then the enemies go in order or turn order is determined by speed. In Atelier Iris speed plays a large factor and its possible to for a very fast character to have multiple turns before a slower enemy gets to go.

Also there is a stun mechanic where every time a creature gets hit they get more and more dazed eventually becoming stunned and missing a turn or two if it gets too high.

As for the part about FF-style battles... I was thinking more along the lines of the older FF titles, but I suppose thats still off. I should have said something along the lines of old Phantasy Star / Wizardy style battles. You fight enemy "cutouts" and everyone gets a turn to do something.

You probably won't find anything that will perfectly copy Atelier Iris... but combining few scripts maybe will bring you closer to result you want to get

Phantasy Star... hmmm... it still not RPG Maker style

In RPG Maker by default you get something like.... hmm... for example from EarthBound (game that I really hate)...

Thanks for the information. I was really hoping that you could essentially completely re-do the combat mechanics if you felt like digging into some heavy scripting / programming. Good to know that you can butcher it fairly close though.

Earthbound is a good example of the combat I was trying to compare it too. I've played so many RPGs over the years... especially old ones that it all starts to blend together after awhile.

Oh you can do much more than this... you can re-do everything that you want.

For example this game is also based on RPG Maker:

Oh and Cherry Tree High Comedy Club also was done in RPG Maker...

So yeah you can do anything you want in RPG Maker... you only need skills to do it... those are bloody important.
