Changing Support Runes

"Support Runes cannot be changed during a run!" - the game reports this when trying to change a rune in the support slot, even after unlocking a rune that was previously unavalaible (and therefore, that doesn't pre-exist in any of the still-locked parts of a rune circle). I understand the abuse potential overall, but it's still unfortunate.

When and how does one change support-type runes in the slots? Presumably it's possible for the new clans, but the game does not make it entirely clear. Is it possible for retired clans on "new seasons" either?

I guess that support runes are one of the few things in the game that you have to strategise in the entirety of the rune circle before starting a run (instead of improvising and figuring things out as you play), so I'd like to know and prepare for the next run properly.

You have to access the Rune Circle through the Clan Banner selection on an empty save slot.
