The 'growth' stat might be a bit confusing. It's related to stats gained permanently, either through level ups or Artifacts.
You can check the current growth of your dwarf in the Tavern or in the dwarf details (click on the EXP bar above a dwarf) when you hover over the dwarf sprite.
The growth number is displayed in blue. When the total growth reaches the requirement, you can equip the advanced profession weapon.

I spent 9 hours grinding hard-mode to have the gems to unlock the shield and I can't even use it. Don't you think that's a bit excessive? Also, why is this info not clearly explained in the game? I'm leaving my review up because I'm tired of game devs refusing to clearly explain how things work and leaving the user in the dark.
To add to this, once i get the paladin shield or battle priest hammer, i have to spend tons of money trying to find the armor sets to gain access to the special? Can you explain, Ichbinhamma, y must it be so hard to get a special class build up and running?
Also, Would it be broken in your opinion is special classes that benefited from regular classes counted as those classes? It could be really great for say crusader if i could upgrade my knights to paladins and still get the crsuader option so i could have a build of priests, paladins, and War priests. Same for other special classes, isn't the goal to have mostly special classes in play?
and lastly, (i apologize for adding so much) i am on the dragon boss and Wave 236, the build i think i need to beat the red dragon boss is different from the build allowing me to progress through the Waves. Is that intentional game design that players must alter builds to accomplish boss defeats vs Wave defeats?
The special professions should feel special and not be a complete replacement for the normal professions.
Most successful end-game builds actually only rely on 0-3 advanced professions to complete the main roster of base professions.
The armor parts of the advanced professions are not required in any way, but should just give the player something to look forward to in the later game.
However, I might add an option later to bring a few pieces of equipment from a previous run to a new starting clan.
You can use Paladins and Warpriest in the Crusader formation, as long as you keep 3 Priests and 3 Knights.
Different builds may be better for the bosses. Especially the Crusader formation is quite weak against dragons, but it is possible to beat all content with it. It is intentional that the player has to adjust his build for the bosses as this is different content.
Lastly, I've been adding more and more options to make acquiring gems easier over the last few updates and I will continue to do so.
Please remember that:
1) The game is still in Early Access and balance adjustments are made on a regular basis roughly every month (there were 14 updates over the last year).
2) The Rune Circle is designed to be used differently for each clan and it is NOT REQUIRED to completely finish it in order to experience the whole game.
You will LOVE the Dark Dragon.
And Hans, I am sure I will.
Just to add to this, I hope you know that I'm not 'refusing to clearly explain'. I try my very best, but I'm just a solo developer. I know this part needs some work and it will be updated during EA as soon as I find a better solution and the time to implement it.
I would appreciate that a lot :)
