1 Knight (with shieldwall)
2 Warriors (One Broadsword and one Hammer)

3 Banners for the Formation Bonus (use 3 blue banners until you start unlocking different ones, then one of each different banner) (Plus, since they heal allies for 5% of max hp, they output a lot of healing if you start stacking STA/Speed/(Wis or Mana Regen) paired with the formation bonus synergy)
3 Phoenix Fire Mages to start a run that I then diversify to (Serpent, Eruption, and Thunderstorm staves)
I also avoid Hammer Orcs with the Shatter ultimate if there are more then 2 on a team. They hit really hard. Thunder Mage Orcs also deserve this same mention as they can be really rough without a Thunder Ring Artifact that focuses and greatly reduces lightning dmg to a specific unit wearing the artifact. In which case, until you have that artifact, they'll blow up your mages, and I'd steer clear of fighting too many of them.
I hope this helps.
~All the best
Edit: I should note that I'm heading towards 90 Victories with my first death being at Wave 70 and my second at 85. I believe the first and second deaths were caused by Hammer Orcs and a combination of Mages since I've been trying to limit test the team.
Tried a number of things suggested, many of them helpful, but to date this was the most effective by a fair margin... I got all the way to 149 victories (and honestly mighta been able to keep going, but started multitasking after a certain point and wasn't paying attention to a moment I ought to have hit retreat).
Thanks to everyone rendering advice though! Feel encouraged to continue, should anyone have new insights... I imagine this thread could be a help to more people beyond me
The plus side is the Poison buffs bleed enemies out real aggressively, so you can just out-survive enemies potentionally, and that your drop rate becomes absurd (cause it's up 35%), giving you fat stacks of cash to gear up with.
The always-smart advice of being wary of enemy hammers and mages becomes considerably more important than some other builds (since your DPS is great but CC is lacking).
It's about the second most effective build of what I tried, but I would admit Luis's Crusader ice aoe build had less margin of error

1. Think about which formations you want to build around
2. Select one or two Uber-classes that you will build around (e.g. I love Warpriest and Reaper)
3. Upgrade to Hero Dwarves asap. Your non-hero dwarves are nothing more than experience batteries to pass exp on to the Hero Dwarves. Get 10 experiences batteries in group as early as possible...before battle 10. As you find hero dwarves, use your tavern to 1:1 give the experience from a retiring experience battery to a hero dwarf.
3a. Swap out Hero dwarves. Your non-optimal hero dwarves are just experience batteries to later 1:1 swap out to optimal hero dwarves. Note that for 10 levels you can't put an uber-class weapon in the new hero dwarves hands, so, I try to find a way to get the new hero dwarf to level 10 quickly so that all subsequent leveling has maximized level ups. This later point can be tricky.
4. Manage every level up. Every level up needs to maximize use of an uber-class item (which gives two points) and two artifacts, which gives one point each. Thats 4 points per level for every hero dwarf.
5. Kill the ogres as soon as you can. They give artifacts that give 1 str and 1 stam per level. My earliest ogre kills have come around 68, but it's not uncommon to need to wait to 100+ to get an ogre kill, UNLESS i'm proficient in swapping weapons and equipment around to build an ogre killing strike group that exists only for that purpose. I then unswap the equipment to go back to regular leveling.
6. If you like, try building around the new eggs. +2 stam per level, managed properly from battles 60-200, will give massive stam to your team of 10 hero dwarves. My level 200 group recently had an average of about 350 stam per her dwarf, topping at over 400 stam.
7. Equipment. Decide on your endgame equipment and buy every one that pops up. You will need every single piece you can get your hands on to even think about upgrading ot orange and red items.
8. Manually upgrade all of your equipment in the forge. In other words, start with a white piece, and add the stat(s) you want. Repeat for all 5 upgrades to red. 3-4 pieces of equipment each holding 5 upgrades and let's say 5 Str upgrade points per upgrade means lets say 75-90 points to some primary stat just by managing equipment properly.
9. Battles. Personally, I like to focus on "candy store" battles above level 50. These are the battles against only a few enemies but where all of them are elites. This maximizes both your money won and also the number of chances you will get for the key equipment you will need to forge upgrades. You spend a lot of time rolling to get to the next candy store battle. The result of this strategy though is that by e.g. Battle 200 you can have a level 25 store and your group of 10 hero dwarves can have mostly orange equipment, 100% customized. The disadvantage of this strategy is your dwarves are significantly lower level then they would otherwise be. I believe the far superior equipment and higher store level balances this out.
...so much more to say. A lot of little details and micro management. Super fun though! Good luck, I'd be happy to answer any other questions.
I found my archer with explosive arrows doing absolutely most of the damage. Later I replaced a dd with a legendary dwarf and also got that legendary dwarf after lvl 100 - those really kicked in some more damage. Mage (with this lightning set) and rogue also did a good job, but rogue lacked equipment lately... I was about to get that white stuff, which probably would have given him some more dps..
What is important to remember, because I didn't get it until my second run, when leveling your dwarfes in the tavern, make them the prefered class (give them the correct weapon) and put the Artifacts in FIRST. Only then start leveling aka drinking the beer. Otherwise you miss out points. I only started leveling my hero dwarfes when I finished the 2 Trolls to get the trolltooth necklace in order to max them out as much as possible.
