The fact of the matter is that the skill ceiling is lower, now I'm one of the many (read most people) that hit my ceiling in DMC and never could progress past it. It meant having to turn away from the game and start listening to the community to learn how to do 'this', or do 'that'. things that I would never think of doing. In this way it's an inaccessable series to most people.
So I've found the mistake the hardcore crowd make is in thinking that if more people can do these things, and do them without help or support from them then the game has failed them. They aren't elites to pity the undeserving anymore, thier position of power is near null with the game, thier fun is over. Now that's just my experience, they don't all do it for the kudos.
I noticed you said "That Bad" I assume you've been exposed to this game in an unfavourable light. TB didn't do that, most reviews don't do that. So I'm wondering from where you're coming from, are you looking for justification of not liking the look of it, or do you think people have been unfair to it? Do you play DMC, are you an action game fan? The warning I'm giving you here is that the reaction to the individual elements is mixed, but is mixed because of the biases associated with being involved with the outrage, or of the series. Standards and expectations for certain things have been massively exaggerated for the plight of the franchise at this time. It's an incredibly relative experience so I must ask from where you're coming from.
Story: Not amazing writing, but the cutscenes (quality) make it entertaining to watch.
Combat: Spot on! The game eases you into the move set, but never holds your hand too much. The ease of use, and ability to string combos together is extremely satisfying.
Difficulty: I played on the default highest setting (probably what you'd call "Normal") and found it a bit too easy once I'd learnt the moves. Though I've since read that the preferred difficulty to play at is the unlockable "Dante Must Die", which requires two playthroughs to unlock.
Currently I'm on "Son of Sparda" difficulty, and the enemies certainly require more effort as they are mixed up, and enemies you don't see until later in the game start in the first chapter, or are introduced earlier. God knows how hard I'm going to find the next difficulty up.
Length: It's not too long, but it's also not too short. Since the game seems to be based around playing more than once it plays to its strengths and rewards more playthroughs.
Overall: I'm really glad I went in with no expectations as it has been my favourite single-player game since Max Payne 3. I played DMC1, 3 and 4, and this is probably my favourite (taking of rose tinted glasses).
I've tried to play the older DMC games as a 12 year old waaayyy back, but never got past the timed puzzles. I did enjoy the combat to some degree. My only experience with somewhat similar games is god of war(no favorite, but I like it), and Darksiders 1 and 2(enjoyed everything but the puzzles).
The Combat system is fluent and alot easier to handle then in the previous games, people who don't have much expierience probably can get into the combat pretty fast the combination of Devil and Angel mode takes a bit longer because you have to hold down either button whilst fighting making it confusing sometimes in the heat of the battle. The Devil Trigger is another story, it certainly boosts your damage output by quite a bit but you can't really make use of it since every enemy gets shot into the air making it hard to dish out good combos(except for bossfights since most of them can't be tossed up). Most people would say the missing target lock is a flaw but honestly i didnt really notice it since i could hit the one i wanted to hit.I would of liked if you had the option to lock angel and devil mode with one press on the button, like the styles of DMC 3 and 4,would make it less confusing.
I'm a bit disappointed in Dante's behavior though since the punchlines are pretty shallow and not as witty as the old one, could be due to that hes still a teen there and how Vergil said "raw".As for Vergil, he lost his old honor attribute, maybe he picks that up later on in the series, wich makes him seem like an huge bum, though he was already cruel in the previous series(looking at DMC 3 where he just slew the demon who failed to kill Dante and calling everyone scum, he does that in a certain move when you play him). Then there's the girl Kat not sure bout her didn't leave the same impression as trish since she's more like your "normal" girl in behavior and not an bad ass gun swinging electrifying demon(i like the looks of her more though guess thats just a personal taste). The evil guys are well done and authentic, some of em look really nasty.
All in all its a solid game and a pretty good start of for the series. Still hope the old Dante gets back to some extent in later series as he grows older. For me its an 8/10 Combat flaws and Dante's weak punchlines gets the statistic down.
As I said, it was my first DMC game and I had a lot of fun with it. It took me around 11 hours to finish it on my first playthrough on the easiest difficulity. But if you have the choice buy the console version. The controls are way better there. Or just buy a controller for your PC.
I would give DmC Devil May Cry a good 7/10.
How could you think it would be bad? lol. Wrong title dude.
HAVE YOU LIVED UNDER A ROCK FOR THE PAST YEAR!? The hate from the fans of previous games have been surrounding this game like an std since it's announcement.
The downsides are that the scripting was not as clever as the other DmC games and characterization was quite poor. Vergil has literally no honor and Dante isn't as funny as he was in the other games.
Gonna dive back in on the harder difficulty settings, that's when the game'll really come alive :D
