Newcomer to the genre
Would you guys consider this game to be a good starting point for getting into this kind of genre of games or the Devil May Cry series? Never really played the older games, so my judgement on how stupid or not stupid Dante looks is nonexisting. Just wanted to know if the game is good just as a hack-n-slash title for newbies.

Well, it IS a starting point. I don't believe they made any of the others besides 1 a good jumping on point. The barrier to entry has been lowered on purpose for that reason. BUT saying that, it's also said that the more skilled you are, the more you'll enjoy playing. It's something that takes time and isn't a game for lazy players, so don't expect a full grasp of it after only an hour. This still applies with DmC but it doesn't have the highbar that say 3, or 4 had.

It's a shame to me at least, that DMC iterates on it's own design very very little since the first game, so you'll probably find little retro DNA in there. That's not a bad thing, you'll be able to go back to the first game and not be completely alienated by having only known this game. So if you have a blast here, go to DMC 3 (it's much more hardcore, in it's difficulty and mechanics) you'll have much more fun this way. It's never a good idea to only listen to the people screaming how awful a game is, or to those screaming how awful it is people feel that way. The only bad egg of the series is DMC2 (universally agreed). They've flitted on campy and cartoonish throughout, it's really just a matter of taste which you'd find most palatable.

If you want a challenge play 1 or 3, if you want a good but not TOO hard play 4 if you want easy babby trash, with a awful story play this one.

This would be best spot to start, It has multple difficulties that suits skilled to non skilled players and if end up liking it can always get the HD collection on consoles if curious about the older entries.

DMC4 or Darksiders will be perfect starting point. They are cheaper too

I've never played any of the Devil May Cry games, except for the demo of DMC4 on Xbox, and the demo of DmC. Personally, as an unexperienced DmC player, I enjoyed the DmC demo a lot more than DMC4. Here's the choise from my point of vieuw: Do you want to play older games that fans of the series adore because it's "the real one", or do you want to play newer, yet just as good games that fans hate because it's "not the real Dante"? It's a reboot, it's not meant to be part of the DMC series, so buy it. I bought it, and I adored the demo.

ok quit with the ridiculous amount of swearing, the OP was asking for an opinion not a flame war, my advice would be possibly try the demo on either console if not possible then try dmc 4 as it is not that difficult

I gave him my opinion and it's buy the DMC hd collection if you have a console, then of course some little idiot had to say HATERXDDD because he is 12 years old, but that is the audience this pathetic excuse for DMC is aiming for.

It's definitely a good entry point, it may not embody much of the spirit of the original series,
but its gameplay is well balanced for beginners and up.
When I played DMC3 as a kid I always got stumped at Cerberus and then Agni and Rudra,
otherwise the game was balanced enough and 4 was all around easier than its predecessor,
even so, I can definitely recommend DmC for this purpose.

Hi - I've also never played any of the DMC games... is the complete package worth it? I'm just wondering what the max resolutions are on dmc 3 and dmc 4 and if you can reconfigure controls and keyboard? I find that being stuck with wasd controls etc kill games for me... as do some games that are just too low resolution for my system to handle well.

4 is probably the best game on pc ever it runs on anything and works really well, 3 well you are probably better off emulating it. If you have a console I STRONGLY advise getting theDMC hd collection and then just picking up DMC4 on steam :)

Why was my original answer deleted? Fine, i'll answer again.

To OP, YES it is a good starting point. The combat is easier than some games in the genre, but still forces you to use some variety to keep it from feeling overly repetitive. The story is self contained, and in no way related to the original DMC series. DmC is a reimagining, so you don't need to know anything before you go in to it.
