Chronological order of the games?

I saw an older thread that touched on this before, but I was hoping for a clearer answer. I had not known anything about Devil May Cry until I decided to buy this game and had just now beat it.

I loved it, and really want to play some more and dive deeper into the universe, but have no idea what order the games go in. From what I read, this is only a reboot. So, if I wanted to follow any certain story, which games should I now get and play? And if they aren't all on steam, what systems are they on?

DMC3's PC port is not very good its a hassle to fix

so i would suggest getting the HD collection on PS3 or Xbox360

as for DMC4 the PC ports work fine

just get the HD collection on steam for 1-3, its a really great port, then get the DMC4SE on steam as well, they are both on sale right now! they run waaay better than the PS4 version

why wouldnt he get the steam HD collection, all the games are really well optimized and you get sweet 60 fps. The older DMC 3 version on steam is gawdawful but the HD collection version is like the definiative edition

They could remake the entire 1 2 3 and 4 with the RE engine if its gonna be good at performance.

Yeap it's pretty much confirmed nowdays that DMC3 -> DMC 1 -> DMC 2 -> DMC 4 -> DMC 5. When you play DMC 5 you have a story recap and they put the games in order there.
